While the rivalry to be the best cricketer in the world continues, we go off the mainstream and explore the possibilities of a better PM option between modern day legends, Virat Kohli and Steve Smith. Sounds interesting?
Yes, you read that right. Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Prime Minister – sounds weird? Probably doesn’t fit into the context?
Virat Kohli and Steve Smith are by far the two most prolific cricketers going around presently. Both of them are often compared for their heroics on the cricket field. Not only fans and media but also many former cricket greats have a tough time when asked to choose the better cricketer between the two. Both the stalwarts are just neck-to-neck.
However, we won’t be getting into the heated debate once again. With cricket on hold at the moment due to the COVID-19 pandemic, every world leader is at the forefront leading their countries. So, our team just wondered what if Virat Kohli and Steve Smith contest for the Prime Minister’s chair for their nations. Who could be a better leader in the longer run? Sounds interesting?
Highlights! Can Virat Kohli and Steve Smith turn out to be a potential Prime Minister option?
- Virat Kohli’s uncontrolled aggression accompanied by sudden calmness.
- Steve Smith’s ‘brain-fade’ and sandpaper scandal moments.
- How will the two cricket stalwarts handle a COVID-19 like crisis?
Mix of aggression and calmness
If there’s one aspect which completely distinguishes Virat from Smith, that’s his aggression and get-into-the-face attitude. Over the years Virat has evolved as a great batsman, but that hasn’t let him tone down his aggression.
Now, this is a trait needed in a world leader. While being compassionate and understanding, a leader must be ready to take an aggressive approach when needed. Moreover, a leader must be ready to retaliate and respond in case a country is in danger of facing an external threat.
Virat’s aggressive nature gives him an added advantage here. Smith has historically been a soft guy, focussing more on his game.
The sandpaper scandal
The sandpaper scandal in South Africa has been a blot in an otherwise illustrious career of Steve Smith. This is one aspect that will most likely hurt Smith’s chances for the PM candidature. Why will people accept a leader who has already let his nation down on the cricket field?
Furthermore, Steve Smith was the captain of the Australian team when this incident took place. He had every information about the act, was in full charge of everything and could have easily prevented whatever took place. But somehow Smith failed. He failed as a leader.
Smith has though made a successful comeback in international cricket since that particular incident. However, cricket and politics are altogether a different game and Smith might find it hard to stamp his assurance here.
Rising through the ranks
Both Virat and Smith have worked hard and risen to the top. While today Virat is regarded as an all-time ODI great, Smith is a top-class test cricketer.
Virat’s attitude and on-field conduct have always kept him in headlines, albeit for not so good reasons. But of late, he has worked a lot on his character and curbed his instincts post getting Team India’s captaincy. Virat has successfully led his team to the top of the ICC Test rankings while being prolific with the bat.
On the other hand, Smith has been a relatively calm guy and had a respectful cricket career until the sandpaper saga unfolded. He has a decent captaincy record but has often failed on delivering the killer blow at moments. However, Smith has a much cooler head than Virat.
With both Virat and Smith having faced ups and downs in their career before rising up the ranks, they are equally well placed to be on the PM’s chair.
Handling the COVID-19 crisis
The current COVID-19 crisis has challenged leaders worldwide. In a situation when even the US President has become helpless, the need for more vigilant and action-oriented leader is the need of the hour. On the contrary, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to curb COVID-19 in India have been exemplary.
Having already captained their teams, both Virat and Smith have a proven leadership quality. Virat has often taken strong decisions during team selections with many of them leading to positive results. He has proved himself to be an able leader. Hence Virat has the experience of taking well-timed decisions and can prove out to be an able leader while putting strict measures in containing a situation like COVID-19.
On the other hand, Steve Smith has had a relatively shorter time as a captain with an average captaincy record. The ‘brain-fade’ moment on the tour of India and the ‘sandpaper scandal’ are incidents that have often put a question mark on his decision making capability. As a result, Smith may relatively find it tough to take proper actions while dealing with a situation like COVID-19.
As per our reading of the game and analysis, Virat Kohli seems to be a better option for the chair of a PM when compared to his counterpart Steve Smith. Though Smith is equally capable, he seems to be falling short on couple of instances.
