IPL 2019: DC defeated RR by 6 wickets
Two cricketers not considered good enough to make it to the world cup squad choose an IPL match to prove they are much more than mere numbers and assumptions. Ajinkya Rahane smashed a scintillating ton and remained no out which got RR to a total of 191 for the loss of 6 wickets.
In reply to Rahane’s century Capitals opener, Shikar Dhawan made a quick fifty setting the pace and Rishabh Pant took the legacy forward by blasting 78 off 36 balls handing DC a six-wicket win.
Winning the toss Shreyas Iyer, DC skipper opted to bowl first.
RR Playing XI – A Rahane, S Samson (wk), S Smith (c), B Stokes, R Parag, A Turner, S Binny, S Gopal, J Archer, J Unadkat, D Kulkarni.
RR started on an ominous note. A mix-up in calling leading to the run out of Sanju Samson in the second over with just five runs on the board. The focus now was on Ajinkya Rahane who has been dethroned from Royals captaincy. Rahane and Steve Smith guided Royals to 191 after a 130-run second wicket partnership.
After being dropped by Ishant at 16, Rahane started flowing as he started taking more risks, piercing the gaps and smashing 3 sixes to raise his fifty in 32 balls. Smith too raced to his fifty but was dismissed to a well-judged catch by Chris Morris.
Rahane continued the onslaught from his end bringing up his second IPL century with a double off Ishant Sharma in 17th over. DC then managed to pull things striking at regular intervals. Ashton Turner was out for duck for fifth consecutive time. Delhi’s yorker specialist, Kagiso Rabada striked twice in the final over which prevented Royals from getting to 200.
DC Playing XI – P Shaw, S Dhawan, S Iyer (c), R Pant (wk), C Ingram, S Rutherford, C Morris, A Patel, A Mishra, K Rabada, I Sharma.
A brisk start from Shikhar Dhawan who scored a quickfire half-century gave DC the start they were looking for. Eight fours and a six came off Dhawan’s bat before he was out for a 27 ball 54. Soon Delhi lost their skipper Shreyas Iyer but Pant’s 78 along with Prithvi Shaw’s decent 42 ensured that his side can now start dreaming of playoffs.
It came down to six of the last over and Pant who had added 84 runs with Shaw for the third wicket, took Delhi home with a six of Jaydev Unadkat’s second ball. The win bought Capitals to the top of the table.
