Following the recent completion of Indian Prime Minister’s dream project, it’s time to get an insight into the major companies and organizations that have made the Motera Stadium project an engineering success.
The recently constructed Sardar Patel Stadium, popularly called the Motera Stadium, in Ahmedabad has officially become the largest cricket stadium in the world. With a seating capacity of 1,10,000, the stadium is also the second largest stadium in the world and only behind the Rungrado May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea. Motera has been one of the dream projects of Prime Minister Modi.
The Motera Stadium was recently inaugurated by the US President Donald Trump and the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the former’s visit to India in February. The stadium is a perfect example of an engineering masterpiece with state-of-the-art facilities.
The project is a collaboration of Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) with some world renowned companies – companies that have made Motera Stadium the largest cricket stadium in the world.
Let’s get an insight into some of the major organizations involved in this mega project.
Highlights! Companies that made Motera Stadium project an engineering success.
- L&T was provided with a contract of complete makeover of the Sardar Patel Stadium in 2016.
- NetRack is providing IT services and IT server racks for the mega project.
- Populous and Walter P Moore have contributed in the roof and stadium designing of the Motera Stadium.
Larsen & Turbo (L&T)
A renowned construction giant, Larsen & Turbo (L&T), became the first company to be associated with the mega project of constructing the Motera Stadium. In December 2016, L&T was handed the contract of doing a complete makeover of the old Sardar Patel Stadium. The then GCA vice-president Parimal Nathwani offered a letter of acceptance to top L&T officials in presence of key GCA officials.
“The world’s largest stadium is perhaps the best gift to a cricket crazy nation.” – SN Subrahmanyan, CEO & Managing Director of L&T
The stadium was a dream project of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the leadership of GCA president Amit Shah. Buildings Et Factories, a business vertical that resides within L&T Construction, constructed the stadium.
NetRack
A leading solution provider for data centers and end-to-end IT server racks, NetRack, has also been a contributor to India’s mega project. NetRack has offered different models of Racks, PDUs and accessories suitable for Networking , AV and Telecom to the GCA.
Most of the products offered are UL certified, have required specifications and also aid in quick assembly. Ravi Raj, the Director for Sales & Support of NetRack, is pleased on getting an opportunity to be a part of this project.
“We are honored to be involved in the monumental project from the conceptual stage and are glad to have leveraged this opportunity to provide our Racks, Power Distribution Units, and accessories to address the scaling and efficiency issues for the entire IT infrastructure which aided in retrieving maximum efficiency from the new setup. We thank the key national partners for their support in helping us to achieve the same.” – Ravi Raj, Director for Sales & Support, NetRack

Populous
One of the globally renowned architectural and design firms, Populous, was involved in designing the Motera Stadium. The designing aspect handled by Populous has been top notch and provides an unobstructed view from all 1,10,000 seats in the stadium. Despite its huge size, the stadium was constructed in a record time of 3 years.

The stadium includes 76 corporate boxes, 4 dressing rooms, an indoor cricket stadium, an Olympic-size swimming pool and state-of-the-art club facilities. The designing by Populous is a deliberate round and open stadium with 360-degree views that will make sure that spectators are a part of the game.
The stadium won’t just be used for cricket matches but will also be used for community purposes. The iconic “Namaste Trump” event was an indication of the same.

Walter P Moore
Another established construction company, Walter P Moore, served as the structural engineer and connection designer for the roof of the humongous stadium. With Ahmedabad located in level 3 seismic zone, the roof design is light-weight and seismically separate from the seating area.

Walter P Moore performed a detailed design of the system. It proposed a light-weight and flexible tension/compression system which allowed for cost reduction while simplifying connection and erection procedures. Teflon-coated woven fiber glass rings float between the bowl and ring via cable spokes. This sort of roof structure allows for quick movement in case of a seismic activity.
When does the Motera Stadium debut?
With the “Namaste Trump” event already a hit, the cricket world is now eagerly anticipating the first match at this magnificent arena. The BCCI had initially planned to host a Asia XI and World XI match as the opening game for Motera. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has cancelled all sporting events for the time being.
The recent home schedule released by the BCCI confirms that Motera Stadium will be staging an India-England day-night Test match in 2021. However, it’s a high possibility that the stadium will make its international debut before that. So, it’s only a matter of time before the Motera Stadium goes into the history books.
