Just like there’s always a ‘first’ for anything, there have been various ‘firsts’ in the Indian Premier League. With IPL 2020 around the corner, it’s the perfect time for a throwback to all the trendsetters of the mega T20 league.
Heads Up! IPL 2020 schedule released by the IPL governing council.
- IPL 2020 set to start from 29th March, 2020.
- Defending champions Mumbai Indians take on Chennai Super Kings in the opening game in Mumbai.
- With four titles, Mumbai Indians have won the IPL championship the most number of times.
- The first edition of the mega T20 league was played in 2008.
First century in IPL
The first century of IPL history came in the very first match of the T20 league in 2008. Playing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Kiwi wicket-keeper batsman Brendon McCullum smashed his way to an unbeaten 158 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Bangalore’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
McCullum’s blistering innings brought a stir among the cricket frenzy fans in India. This was a spectacle never witnessed before. IPL was off to a rollicking start.
First century by an Indian in IPL
Owing to political reasons, the second edition of IPL was played in South Africa in 2009. Playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Manish Pandey scored an unbeaten 114 against an Adam Gilchrist led Deccan Chargers (DC) at Super Sports Park in Centurion.
Many Indian stalwarts have since gone on to score hundreds in IPL. But Manish Pandey’s innings has been the stepping stone for each of them.
First to smash 100 IPL sixes
In 2012, playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) West Indian giant Chris Gayle became the first batsman to breach the century of sixes in IPL history. With 326 sixes in 125 IPL matches, the self-proclaimed ‘Universe Boss’ is by far the leader in the six-hitting fest.
The first Indian to achieve this feat was Suresh Raina from Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He accomplished this in 2013. Often called ‘Mr. IPL’, Suresh Raina was also the first player to feature in 100 IPL games.
First to cross 1000 IPL runs
In 2010, Australian wicket-keeper batsman Adam Gilchrist became the first player to cross 1000 IPL runs. In the same edition, Suresh Raina became the first Indian to accomplish this.
First 100 & 200 run partnerships in IPL
In the first edition of IPL in 2008, the then Delhi Daredevil’s (DD) openers Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan stitched a 112 runs partnership against a Shane Warne led Rajasthan Royals (RR). That was the first instance of a hundred run stand in an IPL game.
The first 200 run partnership of IPL was knitted by the Australian duo of Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh in 2011. While playing for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), the duo added 206 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Dharamshala.
First to 100 IPL wickets
An IPL history is incomplete without mentioning the Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga. In 2013, while playing for Mumbai Indians (MI), Lasith Malinga became the first bowler to claim 100 IPL wickets. With 170 wickets in 122 games, Malinga comfortably sits at the top of the IPL wicket-takers list.
Amit Mishra is the first Indian to follow Malinga’s feat of 100 IPL wickets. He achieved the feat in 2014 and is behind Malinga in leading wicket-takers in IPL history.
First 5-wicket haul in IPL
Playing for Rajasthan Royals in 2008, Pakistani pacer Sohail Tanvir ended with an astonishing bowling figure of 6-for-14 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) – thereby becoming the first bowler to take a 5-fer in an IPL game. Ironically, no player from Pakistan has been a part of IPL since. Mumbai Indians (MI) all-rounder Alzarri Joseph broke Tanvir’s record in IPL 2019.
The first 5-fer by an Indian was accomplished by Chennai Super Kings’ Lakshmipathy Balaji in the inaugural edition of the league. His figures of 5-for-24 against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) also include the first-ever hat-trick of IPL.
First IPL champion
Against the run of play and contrary to everyone’s expectations, Shane Warne-led Rajasthan Royals (RR) – probably the weakest team on paper – defeated MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a thrilling final to be crowned as the champions of the inaugural edition of IPL. It has been Rajasthan’s only IPL title to date.
First tied game in IPL
The first tied game of IPL happened between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2009 in South Africa. Rajasthan Royals (RR) clinched the one-over eliminator after both teams scored 150 in their stipulated 20 overs.
The 12 successful editions of IPL have witnessed numerous records being created along with some old ones being demolished. However, the ‘firsts’ of the Indian Premier League will always have a special place in the hearts of the fans. These trendsetters will always be a vital pillar of IPL.
