Deva Katta directs the Hindi adaptation of his 2010 Telugu film, Prassthanam which is about political ambition and corruption leading to downfall and tragedy in a family. The drama unfolds around one family.
After Bhoomi and Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, Sanjay Dutt has finally returned to the fold with his home production, Prassthanam. Set against the backdrop of politics, ‘Prassthanma’ is a remake of the 2010 Telugu hit of the same name. It is about MLA Baldev Pratap Singh (Sanjay Dutt), his loyal guard Badshah (Jackie Shroff), his wife Sukmini (Manisha Koirala), his step-son Ayush (Ali Fazal), his son Vivaan (Satyajeet Dubey) and a conniving businessman Khatri (Chunky Panday).
Deva Katta has edited out unwanted portions substantially. While the Telugu version was over 3 hours long, Prassthanam’s runtime is around 2 hours and 20 minutes.
Prassthanam Movie Review! The Plot
Sanjay Dutt plays Baldev Pratap Singh, a man with political ambitions, which gets fast-tracked when he is handed overcharge of a rural power center. He cements his hold when he agrees to marry the dying leader’s widowed daughter-in-law and adopt her two children.
Baldev is a powerful leader who is bracing to fight to retain his seat. His sons are his Achilles Heel. Saroj (Manisha Koirala) is a mother to Ayush and Palak but the birth of her third child, her son with Baldev, creates a rift between the stepchildren.
In building his own reign, he trusts his stepson more than his own in political matters, thus upsetting his son beyond limits. And this tension gives birth to the riveting twists in the tale.
On The Upside
The movie has quite a few confrontational scenes and Deva Katta has executed them well. Specifically, the scene between Sanjay Dutt and Satyjeet Dubey in the pre-climax is fantastic. Moreover, he has also written the script. There is enough meat in the narrative that will keep you engaged throughout.
The background score of the film is good. The music is acceptable. Coming to the performances, Sanjay Dutt is the life of the film. His character is marked with a lot of shades and he carries that calmness. Be it his emotional side or action drama, Sanjay Dutt has done a fabulous job. Fans of Sanjay Dutt are sure going to love his character.
Ali Fazal shines as Sanjay Dutt’s step-son in the film. He has already proved his acting talent with his previous films and web series like Victoria & Abdul and Prassthanam is another feather in his cap. On the other hand, Satyajeet Dubey was good with his performance too. It looks like Chunky Panday is really enjoying his negative roles as after Saaho, he has impressed everyone once again. His character of a conniving businessman is quite interesting.
On The Downside
Jackie Shroff as a brooding loyal guard to Sanjay Dutt is wasted here. And so is Manisha Koirala. While she looks good, her character is one dimensional. All she does in the film is shedding tears throughout. Amyra Dastur looks good but has nothing to do in the film. She is just there.
Talking about the shortcoming of the film, the ending was not that much powerful. The film has a lot of resemblance to Sarkar and other such films made in the same zone. The romantic track featuring Ali Fazal and Amyra Dastur is forced and has nothing to do with the plot.
All In All
Overall Prassthanam is a one-time watch movie. The story is engaging and interesting. It’s a treat of Sanjay Dutt fans as he delivers a powerful character in the film with Ali Fazal and Satyajeet Dubey.
