How AAP’s Gopal Rai Brought The Forgotten Babarpur Area Back On The Map
Delhi’s Babarpur was a forgotten locality on the banks of Yamuna. Then Aam Aadmi Party and Gopal Rai came along. An area which was known for daylong congestion on broken, narrow roads filled with potholes is today witnessing rapid development and upliftment.
In 2015, when the AAP wave entranced Delhi, social activist Gopal Rai became the Member of Legislative Assembly from the Babarpur Constituency. Babarpur lies in one of the poorest parts of Delhi which looked like a whole different place from the metropolitan narrative of the national capital.
AAP’s coming to power and development in Babarpur – Coincidence?
As AAP came to power with a clean sweep and an unprecedented 67/70 seat victory, Gopal Rai became the State Minister for Transport and Labour. However, even with the two major portfolios and his responsibility as a core member of the AAP Political Affairs Committee, Babarpur remained Rai’s first priority.
Today, Babarpur has changed in leaps and bounds, virtually unidentifiable from its state 5 years ago. Recently, through relentless effort, the MLA Rai has succeeded in initiating the widening of the bridge connecting the area from the nearby Maujpur Chowk. Babarpur area also has two Mohalla Clinics providing free medicine and treatment to the residents.
Gopal Rai freed Babarpur from the shackles of traffic congestion
Traffic congestion was such an unprecedented nuisance in the area that residents couldn’t think of driving into and out of the area without wasting precious hours in the day. Rai’s efforts enabled the relocation of transformers blocking roads in the Balbir Nagar Extension of Shahdara. This was significant in alleviating the inconvenience of motor vehicles and passersby in the area.
Under Rai’s stewardship, Babarpur Bus Terminus reopened thus breathing a fresh air into the economics of the area helping the residents avail the vast grid of public transport that spans throughout the capital. Rai’s efforts helped in the construction of a foot over bridge near the Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, University of Delhi which further decongested roads.
Furthermore, in spite of multiple hurdles, Rai was successful in initiating the widening of the Loni Road bridge in the area as per Delhi-Loni road widening plan. An area known for miscreants, Babarpur is today under CCTV surveillance as part of the AAP initiative to ensure a safer and more secure Delhi for its residents.
