Elected in 2017 by-polls, Sunil Jakhar got defeated by newly- minted BJP leader Sunny Deol, tenders his resignation from MP post.
Gurudaspur being BJP stronghold since 1998 with its star candidate Vinod Khanna, lost the seat to congress post his death in 2017. Punjab is the only state where Congress has performed considerably well and won 8 out of 13 Lok Sabha seats. However, BJP reclaiming its seat back has defeated 3 time MLA and President of Punjab Pradesh Congress committee by a considerable margin of 82,459 votes.
- Except the 2017 by-elections, the Parliamentary constituency (PC) is a BJP stronghold since 1998. Also, the voters are inclined towards celebrity names like ‘Vinod Khanna and Sunny Deol’ more than the party.
- Jakhar being the president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and a 3-time MLA from Abohar constituency had a massive win in 2017 by-polls by defeating BJP’s Swaran Salaria, with a margin of 1,93,219 votes.
- However, AAP candidate Major General (Retd) Suresh Khajuria was at the third sport with 23,579 votes in 2017.
- Along with Punjab, the state unit presidents of states like Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh have also offered to resign from their positions.
In the constituency, more than party the candidate matters. Popular names have always fascinated the voters of the PC, which was the main reason of fielding Deol after a massive defeat of BJP in its bastion in 2017.
