While Donald Trump has presumptuously claimed to be the hardest working and most efficient US president ever, but his official schedule says he is the laziest. What’s the truth here?
Is Donald Trump the most hardworking US President of all time?
Continuing his attacks against the media, Trump claimed on Sunday that he has probably worked more in his first tenure than any other president in the history of the country. He also added that he is the “hardest working president” of the US. I am sure George Washington and Teddy Roosevelt must be rolling in their graves.
Trump’s “busy” schedule
Some time back, a news website Axios got its hand on a leaked document from the White House which showed Trump’s daily schedule. The report said he spends most of the day in front of the television. Despite being an early riser, Trump takes his first meeting at 11:00 am after three hours of “Executive Time,” which means he is in the White House residence, watching television or tweeting.
Watch: No president ever worked harder than Trump
Then he has a couple of meetings, a couple of breaks in between, an hour-long lunch break, and then returns to his residence at 6 pm. So the president of the US has the cushiest job and works for just seven hours with breaks in between.
If we compare this to past presidents, it seems preposterous. Barack Obama began his days at about 9:00 or 10:00 and would only return to his residence to have dinner with his family. However, many times Obama would be spotted working till 1 or 2 am after his family had gone to sleep. Even George W Bush would reportedly start working as early as 6: 45 am.
TV host Joe Scarborough had openly criticized Trump’s schedule as per a report published in Daily Beast in 2019. Calling Trump’s work schedule as an “absolute joke,” he said that he was sure that old men in retirement homes lived a far more active life than Trump.
Watch: TV Show host calls Trump the laziest President ever
Slamming long hours he spent in front of the television or yelling at his staff instead of working for the country, Scarborough said that historians will record that Trump was the laziest president to occupy the Oval House.
It seems that the television host was very amused by Donald Trump’s earlier claims of being the most hardworking president ever.
What Trump claims about past presidents
During his campaign trail, Trump had criticized his predecessor Barack Obama’s work ethics during his presidency and said that Obama spent a lot of time playing golf and vacationing.
In fact, during the 2016 campaign trail, Trump claimed he would rarely leave the White House as there is so much to do as the President of the country. He also claimed that he would neither play golf nor take vacations. But alas, we have got proof that this is not true.
Trump has slammed Obama for playing golf with 27 tweets in total.
Moreover, Trump has played golf on average every 3.7 days in the past. He also has spent a lot of time at Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
The image-conscious president
It is said Trump reportedly spends more time in things that portray a positive image of him than on things that actually matter. A recent Politico report says that Trump’s work activity reflects him spending more time on the performative aspects of the job like signing ceremonies, media briefings, and interviews rather than on the actual job of policymaking.
It is also said that despite having neither experience nor expertise, the hardworking President Donald Trump makes no efforts to read or understand what the job demands of him.
