While Trump’s stringent border crossing policy was aimed at controlling illegal immigration but the Wall has also kept the infection at bay and manageable.
The Southwest border of the United States is a thoroughfare for illegal immigrants entering from Mexico. The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Mark Morgan acknowledged that President Trump’s conservative border policies have also saved the CBP from unmanageable coronavirus outbreaks. The border used to see as many as 144,000 migrants (May 2019), per month before the more stringent policy change.
Highlights! Border Protection agency lauds Trump’s stringent immigration policies and the Wall in times of a pandemic
- The wall helped CBP US Customs and Border Protection critically reduce the overflow of people.
- Trump’s border policy emerges a visionary curbing potential outbreaks by thousands.
- Agency appreciation comes as a much-needed distraction for Trump, under scrutiny for mismanagement.
- Significance in US Presidential Elections 2020.
Furthermore, with President Trump’s series of reforms surrounding immigration, the CBP believes its much better positioned to ensure no infected migrants enter the US. Morgan was full of praise for the Trump administration. He said, “Look at where we’ve come because of this president, because of this administration, because of the tools, including the wall.”
Wall to the rescue
The praise for policy from the CBP is a welcome distraction for President Trump, under immense scrutiny due to alleged mismanagement of the pandemic. Combined that with the fact that the US heads to Presidential polls in six months, Trump’s handling of the crisis could be a make or break result for his fate in the White House.
With over 750,000 cases and 40,000 deaths, US tops outbreaks in other countries by quite a distance. Meanwhile, Trump has come across as nervy and impatient with respect to the economic hit, attempting to reopen the country on multiple occasions. However, the news that the Border Wall, Trump’s flagship idea, directly helped save lives will definitely help in relieving some of the steam.
Ensuring social distancing in packed migrant detention homes
CBP’s idling facilities house multiple people in close quarters. So, loading in more migrants would be a violation of the social distancing norms set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If not for Trump’s stringent policies, migrants, as well as the CBP staff, would have been at a heightened risk of infection.
Watch: Trump’s Wall helped saved lives at the US-Mexico Border
As per CBP, policies like Migrant Protection Protocols set by Trump also helped reduce the numbers at the border drastically. Similarly, network initiatives and the wall system have helped reduce immigrant flow by 100,000 per month in around 10 months. The coronavirus outbreak has stretched the US Agencies to their maximum.
US-Mexico border crossing is witnessing less than 100 migrants in custody when it was 20,000 a few months ago.
While the CBP facilities weren’t constructed with isolation protocols in mind, Trump’s border wall has definitely helped the United States in times of a pandemic. Furthermore, the Wall continues to be constructed amid the pandemic with the US army recently donating $569 million to build the wall.
