Heart attacks, Brain damage or Liver failure, which would you rather face in your life? Hopefully, none of them but here are the chances of facing liver damage in its last stage – cirrhosis.
The liver is an integral part of your body’s energy-producing digestive system. The juices it creates leads to the breakdown of foods and consequently to a life well lived. Liver failure is a scary condition.
- There are various types of this condition too. Depending on the damage your liver experiences, it can vastly vary in degrees of intensity.
- If your liver is beyond repair, i.e, 75% of it is in ruins, you experience a condition known as uncompensated cirrhosis. In case your Liver is not damaged but failing, it is known as compensated
What are the key factors behind cirrhosis?
- Cirrhosis is a very common condition and one of the biggest causes of deaths on the planet. Chances of getting this condition go higher as one grows older.
- Cirrhosis affects more people in the age group of 45 to 65. This condition is the third most common cause of death of people in the aforementioned age group.
- The most common reason for people being affected by this condition is alcohol abuse. Other pressing factors may also cause a Liver failure which includes Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B.
- Hepatitis C is a more common player in the United States which leads to cirrhosis.
- Obesity is another major factor that may eventually lead to liver failure.
- Other metabolic syndromes and diseases may also cause chronic cirrhosis; these include Wilson disease, cystic fibrosis, and biliary cholangitis.

Symptoms before Death
- The most visible symptom of Liver Failure is jaundice; yellow tinge on your skin, eyes and nails. This is caused by your body’s ability to break down food entering your body.
- The body loses all capability to break down oestrogen which often leads to enlarged breasts and shrunk testes.
- In a worst-case scenario; uncompensated cirrhosis leads to fluid collection in the abdomen.
- Inflated blood vessels in the food pipe and tummy are also major symptoms. Cirrhosis can lead to death fairly quickly if it remains unchecked.
- Thinking and hearing problems are other symptoms consistent with cirrhosis.
Cure to Cirrhosis?
- There is no cure to reverse the damage done to a liver. If you lose it, that is that. The only way possible is to go through live transplantation.
- Avoiding substances that harm the liver is a way to avoid permanent damage. Other medications also help in getting through this condition.
