- Lai-Sang Young who is a mathematician at New York University firmly believes, “A lot of the things you think you see you’re actually making up; You don’t actually see them.”
- Studying the anatomy of the brain doesn’t provide with any solutions. No more than looking at the universe can allow you to experience Aliens or Blackholes.
- Young has been doing extensive, applaudable research. They believe that it is all connected to mathematics, like the rest of the universe.
What is this model?

- Young and company are trying to create a mathematic model that is capable of uniting the years of Biological experiments that humans have done on the brain.
- The researchers want to explain how the brain is capable of producing elaborate visual representations of the world based on the little information that our lenses – eyes – capture.
- First steps have been taken into explaining how the brain perceives and quantifies where an object begins and ends.
- The most basic element of vision is the perception of edges of the objects surrounding us. This is where the visual cortex comes in.
- This work on vision is first of it’s kind and they are now taking the next steps into explaining the perception of direction.
How is this new?
- Previous models of the brain have assumed the intricacies of the brain, more specifically the visual cortex.
- While there are facts about vision that we are sure of today, not everything is clear 6/6 vision.
- We know that eyes are the lenses through which we are able to take in light and perceive what is in our field of vision.
- Image of the world reflects onto our Retinas which rest in the back of our eyes like a screen. The eyes are projectors connecting to the visual cortex in the back our brain.
- What the current theories don’t account for is the fact that much of what we see is the creation of our brain.
- The connection between our retina and the visual cortex is minuscule – a total of just 10 nerve cells connect the two.
- Hence, the model doesn’t account for the scarcity of connection. Nor does it talk of the processes that allow us to perceive the world as effectively as we believe we do.
