The new form of a lease arrangement, which proposes sex in place of rent, is growing several spectrums. Several instances found of such advertisements which are looking for “an attractive girl”.
Some people are not aware of such campaigns or they don’t explicitly understand the meaning of several ad campaigns that are going around on several websites.
These ads offer rooms for rent in exchange for “benefits” or “keeping me company”. Others are quite subtle and clear – “free accommodation in exchange for an erotic arrangement”. In simpler terms, these landlords are proposing sex in place of rent.
Lending rooms in return for sexual favours is a peril seeked by campaigners. It is working in several cases due to the housing crisis as young people cannot find someplace nice without paying exotic amounts.
The practice of sex in place of rent is observed vastly in university towns. Creepy rogue landlords target young women for sexual pleasures and in return, they provide them free or cheap accommodation.
“Such offers may breach the Sexual Offences Act. There is frustration that more is not being done”, said justice secretary David Lidington.
Peter Kyle, Labour MP for Hove said, “Since last year, there has not been a single arrest, let alone a conviction.
Campaigners for fair housing have said the “sex in place of rent” has come due to a dysfunctional housing market.
“Some people are desperate for housing. Others have the power to exploit that,” says Kate Webb, head of policy at Shelter, the homeless charity.
