What happened in Narcos Season 1-3?
Pablo Escobar started establishing his cocaine business in 1975. At one point in time, the man owned and produced 80 per cent of the world’s cocaine. Oftentimes, he flew the aircraft himself to-and-from Colombia and Panama, in order to smuggle truckloads of cocaine in the USA. As his business flourished, he purchased another fifteen larger jets and six copters. Since then, the demand for cocaine skyrocketed in the USA and Central America. Escobar’s business thrived.
Gradually, Escobar organized more smuggling routes via air, land and water with his distribution networks spreading into other countries like US (via Florida coast) and Ecuador. Moreover, his massive muscle power instrumented him into bribing bureaucrats and government officials. His power and authority lead him to obtain sophisticated ammunition from the officials for his protection.
The Cali and the Medellin Cartel
There was a time where approximately 60-80 tonnes of cocaine was being smuggled from Colombia to the USA every month.
The Cali cartel and the Medellin cartel were the epicentres of Pablo’s business. Cali is a city in Southern Colombia. On one hand, the Medellin cartel propagated in brutal violence against the Colombian government. And, on the other hand, the Cali cartel solidified in power reaching its peak in the 1990s. Their business grew into becoming the cocaine Inc. fairing as good as any other Fortune 500 companies.
Plata o Plomo (silver or lead)?
Anybody who stood in their way was given two options – Silver (Money) or Lead (Bullet). The choice was up to them to make. But then, with an insane amount of money, violence is bound to follow. With so much power in hand, the drug cartels virtually had the dominance to overthrow the formal government.
However, following Pablo’s death, there was an even more dominant force reckoning and awaiting the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) intervention.
