Subramanian Swamy claims Rahul Gandhi has four passports | MHA issues notice to Gandhi | Congress questions timing | Home Minister Rajnath Singh says its routine.
The row over Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship has emerged as a much publicized issue in the 2019 elections. Credit also goes to the Congress President – his reluctance to quash the claims is fueling the flames of controversy.
“The electoral boat of PM Modi and BJP has completely sunk. The bankruptcy of new ideas is now making them lose the political balance by resorting to such malicious allegations against Gandhi.” – Congress Spokesperson Randeep S. Surjewala
- Ministry of Home Affairs has issued notice to Rahul Gandhi on a complaint filed by Subramanian Swamy.
- Rahul Gandhi has been given 15 days to respond to the notice from MHA over his citizenship.
- In an event, Subramanian Swamy had recently claimed that Rahul Gandhi has four passports, one in the name of Raul Vinci, and that he is a Christian.
- Congress said the MHA notice is a ploy to divert the people’s attention from the real issues.
- BJP leader and Home Minister Rajnath Singh downplayed the intensity terming the notice as routine and not a big development.
The Ministry of Home Affair notice said:
“It has been brought out that a Company named Backops Limited was registered in the UK in the year 2003, with address 51 Southgate Street, Winchester, Hampshire S023 9EH and Rahul Gandhi was one of the Directors and Secretary of the said company.”
However, Rajnath Singh did not jump the gun. He opined:
“When a member of parliament writes to any ministry, action is required on their query is taken. It is not a big development but a normal process.”
Congress member Randeep Surjewala accused BJP of using the issue as diversion:
“The entire world knows Rahul Gandhi is Indian citizen by birth. Modi Ji has no answer for unemployment, agrarian distress and black money, that’s why he’s resorting to the fake narrative through his government’s notices to divert attention.”
The controversy had re-erupted when Dhruv Lal, an Independent candidate from Amethi filed a complaint alleging discrepancies in Rahul Gandhi’s candidature.
Surjewala also said that PM Modi had earlier raised the issue on two occasions in 2015 and then in 2017. He said the BJP was deliberately raising the issue during the polling period. He asked:
“For the last five years, were the BJP leaders sleeping? Why is this topic being raised during the election season only?”
Another Congress Spokesperson Sanjay Jha saw through the notice and gave a witty and humorous response.
Congress comments were supported by CPI leader D Raja who also questioned the timing of the notice.
“Rahul Gandhi has been issued a voter ID. Then why is there confusion over his citizenship? The timing of issuing this notice to the Congress president is questionable.”
BJP MP GVL Narasimha Rao had also raised a similar objection to Gandhi’s citizenship at a press conference on 20th April.
