Ex-Congress President and one of India’s heaviest political names, Sonia Gandhi is set to lead the Opposition in the 17th Lok Sabha.
Sonia Gandhi, taking up the mantle as the party’s floor leader in the lower house, has not been into active politics since her son Rahul Gandhi took charge of Congress party. She won from her family bastion Rae Bareli in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The re-election of Sonia Gandhi as the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) gave birth to many questions: 1. Is Sonia Gandhi planning to come back into active politics? 2. Is Mother likely to replace her son again? 3. Does Sonia doubts on the leadership of Rahul Gandhi?
- The new development took place in a meeting held today at the central hall of Parliament. It was attended by the 52 newly-elected Lok Sabha members along with Rajya Sabha members.
- However, there was speculation as to whether Rahul Gandhi would take on the role, after amid uncertainty of his stepping down from the position as Congress president. In the outgoing Lok Sabha, the position was held by Karnataka MP Mallikarjun Kharge.
- Praising Rahul for his 18 month tenure in her speech, UPA chairperson lauded him for running a valiant” and “relentless” campaign. She also credited him for rejuvenating the organization and for victories in assembly elections in the Hindi heartlands.
- However, Sonia’s name was proposed by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seconded by Jharkhand MP Jothimani S and Kerela MP K Sudhakaran. (Source)
Rahul is still Congress’ man on the ground
However, this was first official meeting that Rahul Gandhi has attended after the meeting of party’s Central working committee (CWC) held on May 25, where he offered to quit as Congress chief.
Does Sonia’s entry means Rahul’s Exit?
With the recent development, there is an indication that Ms Gandhi is making her mind to come back into active politics. Also, with the recent defeat in the leadership of Rahul Gandhi has forced the UPA chairperson to make efforts in order to revive the drowning party. This obviously does not mean that Rahul’s political career has ended but at the same time confirms flaws in his leadership.
