A little boy who is born with a rare skull condition is said to be the first child to survive. The boy is born with Half-Skull only.
Due to a condition called exencephaly, Lucas Santa Maria was born with half his skull missing. Which means his brain was only covered by skin.
Maria, the mother of Seven-month-old Lucas, was suggested abortion when she was ten weeks pregnant. However, she decided to go against the recommendations from doctors.
Lucas was born prematurely in the 35th week. He was weighing 6lbs 5oz, and I was given a list of funeral homes and was told to make arrangements, said Maria.
Maria and her husband, Augusto, were shocked and also delighted to see their son’s condition improve. Lucas was soon able to breathe and eat without help.
He had to undergo surgery, being 4 days old, to remove fluid and damaged parts of his brain. He’s still waiting for further surgery, which will involve molding a skull over his brain at 18 months of age.
Lucas is home as of now with his three sisters and parents and he’s making progress. He is able to eat baby food and is even making attempts to crawl.
He sleeps more than other babies his age but the family and his doctors are working on this with physical therapy. Although his condition is stable he is very delicate.
