Food delivery company Zomato offers 26 weeks paid paternity leave. Also offers $1000 as an endowment to new parents.
Zomato brings the most awaited change for Indian fathers with a 26-week paid paternity leave. Deepinder Goyal, founder of Zomato declared in a series of tweets on Tuesday.
- Zomato to give 26-weeks paid paternity leave and $1000 to new parents.
- A step taken to increase the gender diversity – Deepinder Goyal.
- This policy also applies to cases of surrogacy, adoption, and same-sex partners.
Paternity leave – An important yet neglected issue
There is no government sanctioned law about paternity leaves in India. Even the government sector employees are entitled to only 15 days of paternity leave. The private companies have their own norms, which may or may not be challenged in court. This move by Zomato will not only benefit both the genders but also create awareness on this highly neglected issue in India.
Afterall, caregiving is not just a female’s responsibility
Women, being a major workforce in today’s world, have come a long way in our male-dominated society. Still, only 6.5% of Fortune 500 companies’ CEOs are women. The main reason is the gender-biased nature of the corporate world. To reduce biases and empower women, equal paternity leave for both is a must have changed. This will make the father spend equal time with the child and reduce the burden of the mother’s shoulder. This change will benefit both the parents mentally and physically.
