Movie star and BJP MP from Gurdaspur (Punjab), Sunny Deol is under the EC’s scanner for spending more than the set limit during his election campaign.

Disqualification of Sunny Deol will give the MP seat to Congress’ Sunil Jakhar.
Actually, Poll watchdog has received complaints against Sunny Deol for spending more than the prescribed limit in recently concluded Lok Sabha election. If the action is taken under the rules, Sunny Deol’s membership to the parliament might be cancelled.
In such a case, the defeated Punjab Congress President from Gurdaspur, Sunil Jakhar will be the new Member of Parliament. Sunny Deol took oath in Parliament last Tuesday, chanting ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’.
These days there is a lot of commotion in Punjab Congress. From Chandigarh to Gurdaspur and Delhi, Sunny Deol’s candidature is a matter of discussion.
EC has received documentary evidence
After the allegation of spending more than the prescribed limit in the Lok Sabha elections on BJP MP Sunny Deol, lot of speculation is in air. The Election Commission (EC) received a complaint with documentary evidence about this, which forced it to come into action in Punjab.
Based on the documents, the Election Commission is considering issuing the notice. It is being told that according to the documents available to the Election Commission, Sunny Deol spent Rs. 86 lakhs during the elections, while the limit of expenditure is Rs. 70 lakhs.
What is the Representation of People Act 1951?
According to EC, Section 77 of RP Act, 1951, if a candidate spends more than the specified limit and hides their information from the Election Commission, then the candidate can be declared disqualified. Now the election observers in the account of Sunny Deol have asked his documents of expenditure again.
Legal advisers of Sunny Deol say that the Election Commission team has made a mistake in applying the accounting of election expenses. Soon after checking by the election supervisors, the details of the right expenditure will be given.
Meanwhile, Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar said that after proving violation of the rules, the Election Commission should take action against Sunny Deol.
Compared with other Candidates
According to the Election Commission statistics, Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar, who lost to Sunny Deol from Gurdaspur seat, spent 63 lakh rupees in the election, Peter Masih of AAP spent 7 lakh 65 thousand rupees, Lalchand Kataru spent 9 lakh 62 thousand rupees. Sunny Deol has reached Parliament for the first time by winning the election on BJP ticket.

Gurdaspur might see a new MP
Gurdaspur seat was earlier with another actor-politician Vinod Khanna, after his demise BJP had to look for another face.
BJP had made Sunny Deol the candidate for the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat a few days before the election. Sunny Deol contested against Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar and defeated him with the difference of more than 80,000 votes in the Congress bastion of Punjab.
According to the rules, strict action can be taken against the respected candidate due to excessive expenditure. If a candidate wins the election by spending more and then after confirming the violation of the spending limit, the commission can cancel the candidate’s candidature and declare the candidate coming second as the winner.
