One of the few positives about this quarantine is the opportunity to finally go through with our plans of binging the best movie series of all time.
Over the years, we’ve made plans with our friends or our partner, or just spoken about how we’d wish to have a day to ourselves when we could go ahead with the forever pending plan of binging our favorite film franchise. But somehow due to our busy lives and the abundance of new content coming in every day, those plans never materialized.
This lockdown though comes with a silver lining because there was never a better time to binge-watch some of the best movie series. To make the choice simple for you we’ve compiled a list of the best ever.
The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit
If a list that suggests a movie franchise binging marathon does not start with The Lord Of The Rings franchise then it is never to be trusted. Peter Jackson’s adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy novel is a sight to behold, a monumental quest first lived through the eyes of Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) and then in the prequel through his “uncle” Bilbo (Martin Freeman). The theatrical release versions of all 6 movies combined are 17.2 hours long. If you consider the extended versions of the same then you are in for a 20.28 hours long viewing experience. Now that’s what you call a marathon binge!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe
With the ‘Infinity Saga’ behind us, there was never a better time to binge on the 23 films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some of the original Avengers have bid adieu to the franchise, while some just didn’t make it past the Infinity War. Starting with ‘Iron Man’ made in 2008 and finally ending with the Avengers: Endgame is a great way to power through the lockdown. It will be a great binge unraveling the different pieces of the jigsaw that came together to create one of the most memorable cinematic universes.

The Dark Knight Trilogy
We can all agree that DC Comics have failed miserably at creating anything close to the Marvel cinematic universe. Justice League has been deemed a failure. But what didn’t fail and can probably rise above the Marvel cinematic universe on the basis of just cinematic brilliance is Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy. Christian Bale probably gives us the best version of the caped crusader to date, and by now everyone can agree that Heath Ledger’s timeless rendition of the Joker can never be topped. Watching this trilogy is enough to understand why DC faithful want Nolan to take control of the Justice League Universe.

The Godfather Trilogy
The greatest gangster trilogy ever made has to make it to the list of must-watch film franchises. Especially if two of the films have won the Best Picture Academy Award, and one of those is considered by many as the best ever. With the likes of Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, and Al Pacino at the helm of each film, one has enough reasons to binge this legendary film franchise.

John Wick is the story is of an ex-assassin who comes out of retirement to take down the underworld because one of them killed his dog. Now isn’t that the kind of hero the world needs? And currently, there are three movies in this franchise where the most lovable Keanu Reeves performs some of the best action sequences and memorable kills in action-movie history.

Now that Daniel Craig’s 007 swansong, ‘No Time to Die,” has been delayed, it is a great time to catch up on some of the most legendary Bond films of all-time. Obviously there is no need to go through all of them, 26 to be precise, but every actor who has played the iconic agent has one standout film to boast. Sean Connery has “Goldfinger,” Roger Moore’s got “The Spy Who Loved Me,” Timothy Dalton has “Licence to Kill,” Pierce Brosnan’s got “GoldenEye” and Craig’s best is “Skyfall“. Though we suggest you watch every Daniel Craig Bond film as he undoubtedly is the best 007.

The Before Trilogy
As fans wait with bated breath in the hope of Richard Linklater announcing the fourth installment in his Before series, re-watching the trilogy every time is as a refreshing an idea as the series itself. It is one of the most romantic films of all time. A story of two strangers meeting on a train journey and deciding to spend a day together in Vienna, and falling for each other becomes a series of meetings over the course of three films. Many statements from their long conversations in the film have achieved the status of love quotes over the years. It’s the perfect binge for lovers stuck in quarantine together.

Star Wars – The First Trilogy
Saying that every sci-fi, alien contact, or space fantasy film over the years, takes inspiration from George Lucas’ galaxy from far, far away won’t be an exaggeration. Since the inception of the series, a total of nine-movie Skywalker Saga has been made. But nothing comes close to the classic themes of good vs. evil and impressive storytelling of the original trilogy. When you consider the fact that in a total runtime of 6.20 hours over three films, Darth Vader managed to achieve iconic status as a supervillain with just over 13 minutes of combined screentime is mind-blowing.

Back to the Future Trilogy
All of us have thought at least once in our lifetime about what we could have done differently if we had the ability to go back in time. These thoughts are especially at their peak during the ongoing Covid-19 crisis. And there is no other movie franchise that captures this idea in the best possible sense. The original film Back to the Future is a masterpiece of sci-fi filmmaking, but what is also equally true is that its sequels still don’t get the respect they deserve. So why not turn back time, and watch one of the most iconic franchises of all time, and give it the due credit it deserves.

Ok, we all know that J.K. Rowling’s books are better. But most of the fans of the books, and film critics have unanimously agreed that the motion picture version of the literature world’s favorite boy wonder is just as entertaining if not better. Watching Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint grow into their characters over the span of eight movies while fighting one of the most sinister villains in the history of fiction was more than magical. And during this dire time there is no harm in catching the train from platform 9 and 3/4, and diving straight into the magical world of Hogwarts.

First things first, Jurassic Park is the favorite movie franchise of the writer who has written this article, so it was pretty much going to be on the list. And no one could argue against the fact that the Steven Spielberg classic is an awe-inducing story and a great introduction to the world of dinosaurs. While it can be agreed that none of the Jurassic sequels manage to touch the great heights of the first masterpiece, for a true fan and lover of dinosaurs, watching each installment in the order of release is like a thrill ride giving lessons on science and technology. Binge it for the love of watching a T-Rex enjoying car chases, and velociraptors putting human intelligence to shame.

The Fast and The Furious
If we are going to talk about film franchises and not going to mention the Fast and the Furious saga, then why were we even talking in the first place? We have all loved watching Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his ever-growing family of unbelievably skilled drivers indulge in some of the most testosterone fuelling car chases of all-time. All the films in the franchise might not be the greatest, they truly aren’t, but the soundtrack of each film more than makes up for the lacking plot in some of them. So just get that bowl of popcorn or whatever you’ve managed to get hold of from the grocery store, crank up the volume of the television, and let this franchise make you feel alive. It is probably the need of the hour during this lockdown.
