What democrats saw as their opportunity to be done with Trump once and forever, blew up in their faces as the President’s showmanship that came to the fore in the State of the Union address.
If Donald Trump was the biggest name on the planet, he just got a whole lot bigger. What democrats saw as their opportunity to be done with Trump once and forever, it has just blown up in their faces. President Trump’s third State of the Union address on the eve of his impeachment acquittal was such a success that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi couldn’t keep her emotions in check, and tearing her copy on the stage in a petty display of dejection.

Furthermore, Trump was able to arouse the waning sentiment among his supporters. His emboldened endorsement of conservatism quickly brought loyalty back. Emphasizing on the booming economy and success in domestic policy did the trick for the independent congressmen.
POTUS’s foreign policy too received positive response and his vision for the future of America roused the audience. His address had more attractions in ‘real-time’ – A Scholarship, A Medal of Freedom, and the reunion of a soldier with his family. The drama unfolded and Trump’s stock soared higher and higher with each sentence.
Showmanship – The Apprentice skills on display
President Trump is a true showman and we got a glimpse of the man from his TV days when he glued American families to the screen with The Apprentice. One needs to give a thumbs up to the POTUS’ scriptwriting and visualizing technique.
It wasn’t a speech, but a skit. He explained the achievements from his time at the office through stories that gripped the audience with the all-American sentiment. It had participation from real-life US heroes which immediately resonated with the audience.
Statistical Supremacy – Data never fails
Trump’s speech was a no-nonsense reminder of the sheer progress made under him, not even giving up a glimpse of paranoia about the controversies. He stressed on the achievements in the health domain, the thriving economy from each and every angle, his reforms, tax-cuts and trade deal wins.
Trump’s speech was a no-nonsense reminder of the sheer progress made under him.
He bragged about the creation of new jobs, a substantial fall in unemployment stats, declining number of poor Americans, amplification of workforce, rising wages and rejuvenation of American manufacturing. His well-articulated speech linked the growth of US markets and rising consumer sentiment directly to his work. The Democrats had no answer.
Stealing Thunder From Pelosi
While Democrats spearheaded by Speaker Nancy Pelosi have racked up the impeachment proceedings to the first page for months and divided the house, Trump’s downright ignoring the issue made support flank right back to him.
Trump’s speech did not even mention impeachment, giving him an air of infallibility and somewhat virtue in the face of warranted guilt. This made the awkwardness go right out of the door. Then came his Trump card.
POTUS iterated how unity in the house and a bipartisan approach by the Republicans and Democrats was the only way America can move forward, citing examples like ‘reforms in criminal justice’ and the ‘US-Mexico-Canada Agreement’ to prove his point.
Opposition was left looking Absurd
Arguably, the pre-planned rigid boycott agenda of the Democrats harmed them more than Trump’s dramatic address. Most of them sat tight refusing to commend and appreciate even the achievements, making themselves the awkward part of an applauding house. Their approach lacked imagination so much that they did not even clap for American heroes who were part of the address.

This lack of humility will surely bite back the Democrat hopes in 2020. Pelosi’s Democrats couldn’t have dreamt of a worse outing. That came on the same night of the Iowa Caucus humiliation. Democrat favourite Joe Biden and Warren suffered a dismal turn of fortunes, left behind by Bernie Sanders and surprise leader Pete Buttigieg. POTUS’ speech had a dynamic response and straight away went undercover after Democrat socialist Sanders.
Breaking Down Bernie’s Chance
Trump’s State of the Union address was preceded by a historic highest voter approval rating during his presidency term. If that hadn’t sent the Democrats hiding, his crafted move to denounce Bernie Sanders’ ideology surely will.
Trump rejected socialism openly as the vice that the US should remain away from, much to the dismay of the Democrats. He brought out the example of Nicolas Madura, Venezuela’s apparently ‘Socialist’ dictator. He condemned Maduro’s anti-democratic actions while showing solidarity with the country’s people. The final nail in the coffin in his disguised attack on Bernie was delegitimizing his policy approach by saying that ‘We’ (not he alone) will never let American healthcare structure destroyed by Socialism.
Cutting The Race Open
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from his address was his newfound stickiness with the black American community. He claimed that economic growth had benefitted the African Americans. He also took plaudits for the criminal justice reform which also directly helps ex-felons from the black community.
He brought in names of African American heroes like Dr Martin Luther King, Jr., and Harriet Tubman and praised Black Colleges and Universities. He came across as transparent in his blatant attempt to win over the black Americans vote-bank. Right after the address, the TVs flashed an NFL Superbowl ad that focused on how the criminal justice reform has helped the black community.
Trump’s rising affinity among black voters comes at the same time when the top Democrat primaries are ones which haven’t amused the community. This might be early signs that Donald Trump may be retaining the Oval Office come poll time later in the year.
