The Umbrella Academy is an odd series technically bound by nothing – neither by the laws of physics nor the Space-Time continuum.
The Umbrella Academy has been running for two seasons on Netflix and the show has been a massive success. There is news that filming for season 3 will start in October. So, what should one look forward to in the coming season? (Also, if you haven’t watched the first two seasons yet, spoiler ahead)
Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy is the most bizarre take on superhero films. The series is based on the Dark Horse graphic novels written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá. The show debuted in 2019, following Netflix’s decision to end its collaboration with Marvel. Netflix made a choice and it has paid. In April 2019, Netflix announced The Umbrella Academy had garnered 45 million viewers in just the first month. Season 2 did just as well, looking at the hype in the social media, albeit without any official numbers released yet.
The show’s popularity makes the possibilities of what to expect from the third season very high.
And we can’t wait. The Umbrella Academy season 2 ends at a major cliffhanger where the six from the Umbrella Academy come back to the original timeline (2019) only to find them replaced by a new Sparrow Academy and Ben (part of the Umbrella Academy but dead) is part of the new academy. So, what happened? What will happen in Season 3?
The original clan of the seven adopted siblings, six of whom were alive in Season 2: Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Five (Aidan Gallagher), and Vanya (Ellen Page). The seventh Ben (Justin H. Min) who is also seen as the part of the new academy might come back in both the roles. Now, with the premise set, let’s dive into some theories.
The Umbrella Academy Season 3 – What to Expect?
There is a lot of curiosity around the fact that how did the new Sparrow Academy replace the Umbrella Academy? One probable theory is that as Hargreeves met the six in 1963, he decided not the adopt them again and instead adopting other seven kids who were also born on that same fateful day. But how are both the academies going to play out together in season 3 because that will introduce 6 more central figures in the show which will make The Umbrella Academy even harder to follow. But it won’t be possible to do away with them entirely as Ben is still a part of them.
The Sparrow Academy members appear in the dark in Season 2 so it’s possible some old characters might return through them namely Lila Pitts (Ritu Arya) and Harlan Cooper (Justin Paul Kelly) as these two characters were shown having powers apart from the Umbrella Academy.
In Season 2, we also find out that Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) is some sort of an alien. His alien form gets most close to the powers of Ben from The Umbrella Academy. It’s possible that Ben and Hargreeves are related in ways more than just known yet.

The Politics of Season 3
Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy was pretty in tune with the events of 1960s and don’t shy away from politics either. We see Allison married to a Civil Rights Activists in a racist America still living under Jim Crow laws. Kennedy is the President of the USA right in the middle of the Cold War with the Soviet Union racing to secure a nuclear monopoly. The country is also about to enter the Vietnam war while the hippie culture is making waves inside the nation. The whole plot is also tied up with the assassination of John F Kennedy. So, it’s possible we might find references to incumber President Donald Trump in the latest season.
In Season 2, Klaus is leading a cult called Children of Destiny. This surely reminds one of the iconic girl group Destiny’s Child comprised of Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams. Even though the group comes up about 30 years after the cult, one can never be sure about time in The Umbrella Academy. So, it is possible that the cult survived for 30 years, and converted to Destiny’s Child fandom and make a possible appearance in Season 3.

The Umbrella Academy is an odd series technically bound by nothing, not by laws of physics, or natural processes, not even the Space-Time continuum. Therefore, theories can be endless. But viewers do hope to see more of Klaus and Allison using more of their power and Klaus’ backstory as well.
