As the global influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi grows; this article is about comprehending what he can bring to the table, in reference to global and American politics, if he were to be the President of the United States.
On the eve of Sunday night, the two most distinguished leaders representing worlds largest democracies; Narendra Modi – the Prime Minister of India, and Donald Trump – The President of the United States of America, came together to attend the HowdyModi! event in Houston.
Attended by 50,000 Indian-Americans and thousands from the streets of Houston, the event was a splendid occasion. It witnessed both great leaders captivate the audience, meanwhile giving prominence to the strong camaraderie between the two.
The United States is heading towards their Presidential Elections next year while the world recently witnessed the dance of democracy through the Indian general elections. People in India elected their house of representatives and chose Mr. Narendra Modi to be their leader for the second straight time. Modi won, however, the more significant facet was his margin of victory.
Narendra Modi’s Growing Stature in Global Politics
Narendra Modi led BJP secured record 303 seats thus establishing a clear majority in the Lok Sabha. Today, India relishes strong ties with most of the major countries in the world. Be it the UK, the USA, Russia, Japan, Israel, or France; every major state is India’s prominent ally. Though India and China have been on quits on several issues internationally, yet the trade deals have been prospering well. Since the last decade, India has transformed into a recognizable-growing force, both in terms of hard and soft power.
Today, every country aspires for strong relationship with India, not because of India’s Outstanding foreign policies or prosperously growing economy. Neither for the excellent living conditions, it provides for its citizens (pun totally intended), but entirely the courtesy of Modi’s exceptionally astounding marketing skills.
We should request Prime Minister Modi to pen down his exceptional marketing skills in a book about creating a brand, once he retires. Aspiring entrepreneurs would remain in his debt forever. Considering Modi’s popularity, he can outsell Philip Kotler’s Marketing Management, an apotheosis for generations. Every businessman in the world would love to read about Modi’s magic and get a piece of his way of thinking.
The Modi effect is such that the leader of the world’s greatest democracy, a very successful CEO and the President of the United States of America; Donald Trump has already recognized Indian Prime Minister’s global influence.
Illustration of Modi’s Magic
A couple of months ago, New Delhi sent a proposal to the White House, extending an invite to POTUS Donald Trump to be the chief guest for India’s Republic Day celebrations. Trump cautiously declined. It was reasonable. Donald Trump is an excellent businessman. He understood back then that India is to go through elections in a few months span and thus investment of that sort wasn’t worth it. However, the scenario turned quickly. Modi’s party won the elections and the message was sent to the world, surely to Trump, that his party isn’t going anywhere. The leaders of all great nations congratulated Prime Minister Modi.
Narendra Modi – Donald Trump Relationship
Fast forward a few months, to HowdyModi. New Delhi again sent a proposal to Washington, this time for Trump to join Modi in his address to a strong Indian-American community in Houston. As mentioned earlier, Trump is a smart president. He knows, he is to face election music in a short while. He understands how the support of a global influencer, the leader of the world’s largest democracy, can go a long way to tilt the results in his favor. Therefore, the world got to witness unprecedented history, in the own words of Prime Minister Modi, as the two leaders joined together to exhibit the strong ties and on-the-same-page approach between the two countries
If until yesterday, anybody had doubts about India-US relations, they wouldn’t have those today. The HowdyModi event was so enthusiastic, that opposition parties in India had no choice but to acknowledge Modi’s Magic.
In the light of marvel that Narendra Modi has become, we are compelled to outline what Mr. Modi can bring to the table, in reference to global and American politics, if he were to be the President of the United States.
Modi as the President of the United States
India and America are two great nations, similar in many aspects. Governments from both countries are facing much similar crisis. Perhaps, we have tried to pick five of those similar aspects from Modi and Trump’s book of obstacles in their reign as we try to outline the differences and similarities in the approach of two great leaders in dealing with their renowned impediments.
India has been suffering from cross-border concerns for several decades. While America too aches the growing number of illegal immigrants on their lands. The current president, Donald Trump opted to build a wall across the US-Mexico border at the expense of billions of dollars. The funds for which was provided through a diversion from US military projects.
Would Modi have done something like that? It is highly unlikely. Narendra Modi is an accomplished politician. He knows how to strike and when to strike, not to mention the best way to strike. Perhaps, he would have opted for a diplomatic or a legal but solid approach, considering the legal framework and resources at the disposal of the United States government. Something similar to an abrogation of Article 370 and 35A for removing Jammu and Kashmir’s special status or the steps taken towards modernization of NRC in India, especially Assam.
Dealing with China
Today, the US and China are at each other’s throat when it comes to trade deals and negotiations. Donald Trump’s administration is finding it strenuous to accept China’s growing influence in South Asia. Circumstantial to this brawl between the two countries, companies in both states are losing significant opportunities for business.
If Modi were the President, he would have chosen a middle way to avoid the on-going crisis. He would have built stronger ties with China, ones which would have been beneficial for both countries. As mentioned earlier, India and China have also been at odds at the global front several times in the past, however, that hasn’t affected the trade relations between the two countries. Therefore, if Modi was the US president, the USA and China wouldn’t surely be playing a Trade-War.
Trump administration has been working hands-on-feet to prosper and engage de-nuclearization from states like Korea and Iran. However, even after several meetings with President Kim Jong-un, Donald Trump has failed to make any substantial progress.
Now, if Modi were to deal with leaders like Kim Jong-un, the results can be highly unpredictable. Though it’s cynically hard to deal with leaders like Kim Jong-un. However, Modi administration has also failed to abstract anything worthwhile from their negotiations with their adversary Pakistan. The efforts so far have rendered the relationship between two countries to deteriorate further. Hence, it’s difficult to infer how Modi would have performed any better than Trump about the underlying facet.
Much of Donald Trump’s election campaign in 2016 was rooted in the phrase ‘America-first”. He admitted in a public event that he is a ‘nationalist’. Citing there is nothing wrong with the word. The above statement sparked considerable controversy all around the country.
About Modi; he isn’t much different either. He is a politician of a far-right political party and his views about nationalism are on the same page as with Trump, if not at the same line. Thus, if Modi was the president of the US, his policies would also have given priority towards the promulgation of such laws which favour the Americans primarily.
Denigrating the Opposition Parties
Prime Minister Modi, has effectually rendered his opposition parties powerless in India. Today, congress doesn’t even come close to competing with BJP, let alone defeating them. Not to mention all other parties in India are currently relishing the same stature.
However, it’s not the case with US politics. The United States has a federal structure of government, which makes dominance very hard to come by. Ergo, it would be very interesting to see Modi work in such a culture where he would be forced to fight tooth and nail for implementing his agenda.
These were some of the topics which depict the similarity of concerns the countries face and thus comparing the approach of two leaders. Modi and Trump and their influence are ubiquitous in the current times, though there are a few controversies every now and then. Every citizen of both these countries hopes that the relationship between the two countries keeps enhancing.
If the world is to become a better place, India and America have to play a fundamental role in leading the world towards the direction of prosperity and tranquility. Hand in hand similar to Modi and Trump during HowdyModi!
