The North Korean media and Trump alike call the meeting a legendary, historic event. But what’s the underlying agenda behind the so-called impromptu meeting between Kim and POTUS?
US President Donald Trump of the Republican party met with Kim-Jong Un at the De-militarised Zone at the border of the two Koreas. This meeting is being hailed as a good step forward towards the de-nuclearization of the Korean peninsula.
The question we all want an answer to – Did the meeting have any impact potential or has it been a sham to help Trump win the US election 2020?
Trump had earlier mentioned sending letters to Kim. He sent out a tweet asking the ‘Chairman Kim of North Korea to shake hands with him and say hello.’ That is exactly what happened.
The Japanese President expressed hope that the meeting between the two would lead to some progress. Trump said that the 53 minutes of private talk held between them was to determine whether negotiation progress could be made on the Northern Koreas nuclear program.
The details of DMZ Meet
They were apparently working out some details, the what behind these remains unknown to us.
“Speed is not the object. We want to see if we can do a really comprehensive, good deal. Nobody knows how things turn out, but certainly, this was a great day. This was a very legendary, very historic day.”| DKODING | Newsline | Trump | Trump and Kim’s impromptu DMZ meet – theatrics or progress? |
If speed is not the agenda behind Trump’s meeting, what is the deal that Trump wants to make with Kim?
This meeting comes after the second summit between these leaders held at Hanoi in February fell apart. Although Trump has argued that his relationship with Kim has deepened, it remains open to speculation.
Was it Trump’s agenda?…
People of South Korea have argued that the meeting was all show and no substance, and rightly so. While Trump became the first sitting US President to step on North Korean soil, the meeting’s specifics remain undisclosed.
After the Hanoi meeting in February fell apart, Trump needed to reinstate his hold over the issue. Everyone blamed POTUS of being stringent and unreasonable about his demands from the North Korean state.
At the DMZ meeting, Trump put forward the idea of sanctions relief. He even invited Kim to the White House, stating it would have to be “at the right time “.
Without any real particulars, KCNA stated that “issues of mutual concern were discussed by Trump and Kim but these became a stumbling block for both the leaders.
“This handshake of peace itself serves to demonstrate that today is different from yesterday.” Trump was quoted saying.| DKODING | Newsline | Trump | Trump and Kim’s impromptu DMZ meet – theatrics or progress? |
The idea behind the meet may be to make Trump seem like the best candidate as he takes steps towards said progress. But it is undeniable that the relationship between Kim and Trump is full of shortfalls. This stays true regardless of what the world news covers.
Analysts stand divided about Sunday’s meeting. Most refer to it as ”reality show theatrics”.| DKODING | Newsline | Trump and Kim’s impromptu DMZ meet – theatrics or progress?|
The agenda of the meeting probably affects the world rating of Kim too. While the theatrics may have been useful for Trump, Kim’s global image is also undergoing a change due to the meeting.
“I hope it can be the foundation for better things that people will not be expecting,” Kim said. “Our great relationship will provide the magical power with which to overcome hardships and obstacles in the tasks that need to be done from now on.”| DKODING | Newsline |Kim | Trump and Kim’s impromptu DMZ meet – theatrics or progress? |
The meeting seems to be more like a stunt than a breakthrough. Pyongyang has had trouble with US special officials. While tensions seem to have subsided, the two countries still have a lot to solve.
Let us not forget the fact that President Moon also faces crucial elections next year and this definitely shows him in a good light.| DKODING | Newsline |Moon | Trump and Kim’s impromptu DMZ meet – theatrics or progress? |
Moon was quoted saying that President Trump is going to go down in history as the president who brought peace to North Korea.
While this facade of peace and good relationships may lead the involved leaders to be re-elected, the world does not have anything to gain from their theatrics but false hope.
