It’s election time in India’s National Capital and Delhi’s voters have two options – AAP’s performance of five years is up against the age-old opposition ploy of smear campaigns, led by the BJP and Congress.
Cashless travel, pink travel slips for women, topping innovation index, free electricity, government schools faring better than private schools, are just the tip of the iceberg of developments Aam Admi Party’s governance has done in the Capital city. AAP has performed and is contesting the elections based on work.
Heads Up! Voters have a choice between Stats and Smear Campaigns at Delhi Elections 2020
- A recognizable pattern since 2019

- Who has the mandate in Delhi?
While Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and ruling Aam Admi Party (AAP) focus on a positive election campaign based on their work in the last five years – Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and Congress have taken to familiar territory of smearing and mud-slinging politics.
Congress and BJP have arguably already lost the plot, and that’s showing in their campaigns against AAP. They have both been unable to come up with a clear agenda on how to trump AAP in 2020. AAP’s governance debut has been outstanding and the five years have seen numerous achievements.
A Recognizable Pattern – Not Just For Voters in Delhi but everywhere
The Congress is a party lost in limbo since Arvind Kejriwal dethroned Late Sheila Dixit as the Chief Minister of Delhi. Ruling at the centre, however, BJP seems clueless and faceless in their approach to the Delhi elections. It is resorting to accusations against AAP of making false promises.
In a recent rally in Delhi, Home Minister Amit Shah claimed that he could not find any CCTVs in Delhi and also accused AAP of lying. AAP clapped back with CCTV footage of Shah captured at various places in Delhi.
While the smear campaigns constant since last year, it’s only now Delhi’s voters recognize it as a devious pattern with less than a month before Delhi goes to polls. When AAP declared the targeted transport subsidies for women in the capital in June 2019, BJP’s top brass in the state and the centre condemned the move and called it unfeasible.
While the smear campaigns have been a constant since last year it’s only now that Delhi voters are recognizing it.
Undeterred, AAP achieved it making bus rides free with the pink slip for Delhi’s women. Next, the BJP indulged in fear-mongering. Unabashedly, the party leaders spread panic among Delhi’s residents with fake BIS water quality reports. But that too led to them being caught red-handed.
Stats And Surveys Render Smear Campaigns Futile
Digs and swipes are a mainstay in Indian politics, but they seldom work when the incumbent government has garnered the confidence of voters through its work and development. AAP’s welfarist vision now enjoys the mandate of Delhi’s people. As per latest surveys, Arvind Kejriwal is set to remain the CM in the face of a futile negative campaign by opposition in Delhi.
Stats evidently prove the difference Kejriwal’s party has made in the national capital. AAP’s reformist approach and brand of governance has brought forth policies towards a safer, secure and more equal Delhi.
In Stats – AAP’s Performance In Delhi
For An Egalitarian Society In Delhi
The numbers speak for themselves. AAP’s invested Rs 8,000 crore to develop the same poor colonies which were promised registration and then used as a vote-bank ploy by BJP.
Centre took credit but is still to give the right to live to these poorest class of Delhi voters. On the other hand, constructed roads in 1,281 unauthorized colonies out of 1,797 and laid down sewer pipelines in 1,300 of them.
AAP promised and achieved 24-hour electricity to every household in Delhi and subsidized bills which saw 31 lakh Delhi homes receive “Zero” electricity bills and a further 12 lakh receive 50% reduction.
Every household in Delhi receives 20,000 litres of water free per month. Moreover, 14 lakh poorest receive it for free.
AAP’s intensive effort to bring piped water and sanitation system to all localities in the capital has increased reach from 56% to 93% of Delhi.
Consequently, 1,554 unauthorized colonies which relied on water tankers now receive piped supply of drinking water.
For A Better Educated And Healthier City
AAP made education its priority and raised the Delhi education budget threefold i.e. from Rs 6,600 crore to Rs 15,600 crore. The countless reforms need a different story altogether.
The education revolution resulted in Delhi government’s schools faring better than private schools for the first time in India’s history.
AAP also restricted fee hikes in private schools. Since 2015, most private schools have not hiked their fees.
Likewise, AAP’s healthcare revolution is unprecedented. Delhi is the only state that spends 13% of the total budget on healthcare, which also increased under AAP from Rs 3,500 crore to Rs 7,500 crore.
Each individual, no matter from which strata can receive free medical facilities.
It opened more than 400 Mohalla Clinics and rejuvenated Delhi government hospitals. Dengue which was a menace in the capital met its nemesis in AAP. For the first time, Delhi saw zero deaths where historically around 60 Delhiites lost their lives every year.
For A Safer, Secure And Well Serviced Delhi
AAP installed 1.4 lakh CCTV cameras in its efforts to make Delhi a
no-crime city. It also plans to install 1.4 lakh more in times to come. The free DTC bus service for women also has 13,000 marshals deployed to ensure a safe travelling environment. Work has also begun to install 2 lakhs new street lamps to ensure that every nook and corner in the national capital is well lit.
Delhi’s public transport is being boasted by 4,300 new DTC buses. The metro route increased from 173 km to 289 km and connected with other means of public transport.
Furthermore, AAP’s ‘common mobility card’ offers cashless travel in Delhi metro, DTC and cluster buses. Add to this the odd-even move that tackles Delhi’s poisonous air head-on.
AAP has also revamped how government services are delivered to residents with door-step delivery, a scheme which benefits more than 2.6 lakh people. While internet shutdowns shackle the country, AAP is also installing 11,000 WiFi hotspots across the city.
A Well Run Government Leaves Opposition Issueless
In fact, AAP’s tenure has been a hallmark of efficiency and cost-effectiveness. In AAP’s five years, Delhi’s budget doubled from Rs 31,000 crore to Rs 60,000 crore.
Delhi is also the only state which has reported a revenue surplus.
As per an India Today survey in 2019, Delhi topped the list of government standard in smaller Indian states. Even the NITI Aayog innovation index awarded Delhi the first position in its analysis.
The Options – Clueless, Faceless Opposition
The BJP and Congress campaigns are both targeting AAP by questioning their reforms and spreading narratives of pretence over accomplishments. However, not just the Aam Admi Party but even the residents of Delhi have been quashing the allegations. Delhiites have been posting pictures and videos of AAP’s reforms on social media.
BJP is making far-fetched promises to Delhi’s voters wherein it will amplify the AAP subsidies by five times if it comes to power. However, the approach is ironic and in itself an endorsement of AAP’s model of governance.
Add to this the recent chaos in the capital. The BJP-run Delhi police was spectacularly inefficient in keeping maintaining law and order.
BJP leaders, instead of scrutinizing the police action defamed AAP. They accused it of instigating violence, a claim which was rejected by Delhi’s people. This was proof that AAP had the support of the majority in the national capital.
AAP’s Unprecedented Mandate In The National Capital
So, the stage is set for the biggest electoral fest of 2020. But the Congress and BJP appear to have lost in their agenda for Delhi. Certainly, mud-slinging smear campaigns based on false narratives may appear fruitless as Delhi’s voters decide the mandate in February.
It’s an unprecedented mandate that AAP enjoys in the capital.
Furthermore, from the early surveys, 2020 looks like a repeat of the 2015 wipeout that AAP achieved. Hence, the question is – will AAP better the number from 67 and do a historical 70/70 as Delhi goes to polls next month?
