Tom Cruise just can’t get enough action and the adrenaline junkie audience just can’t get enough of him. So now it’s going to be a delightful and nostalgic 3-year ride for Tom Cruise fans, which included all of us.
Heads Up! Two great flights but real hard landings
- Tom Cruise’s future films and pattern-recognition
- Why Mission Impossible and Top Gun 2 won’t have happy endings
- What we know about the sad end of Maverick in Top Gun 2
- How Ethan Hunt will fail his mission by the end of MI 7?
After a break of three decades, the cocky ‘best in the business pilot’ Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell is back in the cockpit with Top Gun 2 in 2020. Then, after seemingly putting an end to multiple storylines in Fallout, the IMF super-spy Ethan Hunt is back with a new partner in love and crime as Mission Impossible gets part 7 and 8 in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
It’s going to be a delightful and nostalgic 3-year ride for Tom Cruise fans, but filled with a few sad ends.
We have the trailer for the first release i.e. Top Gun and a confirmed cast. While not much about the plot is known right now, it is believed that the movie will have a less than ecstatic ending with a melancholic experience for the audience. Well? Because there are concrete reasons behind it.
Much in a similar way, though not for similar reasons, Mission Impossible 7 too won’t end on a high note for the fans. But how that shall transpire and why the endings will be sour? Let’s find out.
A Nostalgic End to the Ballad of Maverick
Well, we never thought we’d get to see Maverick again. Yet, it’s happening against all odds. Top Gun 2 is all set for a 2020 May release. What we know so far is that apart from Tom Cruise, Iceman Val Kilmer is back. We have Ed Harris playing a four-star general and Miles Teller is playing Goose’s son. In place of Kelly McGillis’s Jackie, we now have Jennifer Connelly playing Cruise’s love interest.
The storyline as per the trailer revolves around a lot of nostalgia and the fact that Maverick cannot stay in the cockpit forever. End is inevitable and that’s what Maverick’s fate will be in Top Gun 2. As he leads his students in a battle in the upper echelons of the atmosphere, Cruise will for once end the movie with his character Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell dying.
The storyline as per the trailer revolves around a lot of nostalgia and the fact that Maverick cannot stay in the cockpit forever.
After once more proving that manned aircraft can’t be totally replaced by unmanned ones, Maverick will make the ultimate sacrifice, one that AI wouldn’t as per the storyline. Mavericks’s sacrifice will also open the door for a spin-off from the Top Gun franchise that doesn’t necessarily have to involve Tom Cruise. That will maybe focus on Miles Teller and Monica Barbaro, the first female pilot in the squadron.
Ethan Hunt will be hungry for blood in MI 8
Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt starts a new chapter in his story as the superspy the world direly needs. It’s believed that the entire team is back for 7 and 8 as well. That means not just Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Rebecca Ferguson (as Cruise’s new partner) but also Hawkeye Jeremy Renner who played William Brandt.
Furthermore, Christopher McQuarrie who’s coming back to direct 7 and 8 after Rogue Nation and Fallout will want to bring the best of his story concoction genius and Cruise’s crowd-pulling, hysteria-inducing stunts. But he needs to ensure that things stay intense for Mission Impossible 8. Quarrie needs to ensure that fans are pulling their hair in anticipation of MI 8. For this, Ethan Hunt will be left failed and probably with one less team member around him.
In Mission Impossible 7, Ethan Hunt will fail his mission and probably with one less team member around him.
Reports and rumour theories put Rebecca Ferguson and Jeremy Renner in the running as the one that will be lost. However, losing Ferguson will make up a more intensifying end and building anticipation for MI:8. Likewise, with White Widow set to play the first female villain of the Mission Impossible series, an old connection with her mother might be the key to why Mission Impossible 7 will not have a happy ending, just like Top Gun 2.
