Moon Knight Episode 6 AKA Season Finale shows the battle of the Gods. Marc Spector and Steven Grant come together but they aren’t alone.
Episode 6 of Moon Knight brought an end to Harrow’s cruel intentions with Moon Knight imprisoning Ammit inside Harrow himself. It also shows how Marc Spector becomes one with Steven Grant, and this allows him to return to life. From Tawaret to the Duat to Khonshu, the episode reveals new information about all these and more. Let us find out about them, one at a time.
Watch: MOON KNIGHT | THE FINALE | Khonshu vs Ammit
Tawaret Reaches Out to Layla
With Marc Spector dead (Moon Knight Episode 5), Layla El-Faouly takes it upon herself to stop Arthur Harrow who is already on his way to the Chamber of Gods to free Ammit. Interestingly, Goddess Tawaret reaches out to Layla using the voice of the dead people. She tells Layla that if Marc is able to return to life, he will need Khonshu’s help without which stopping Harrow is impossible.
It is surreal and awesome to see a God reach out to a human from the Underworld. It only shows that gods who aren’t allowed to walk the Earth can still connect with humans, when they feel the need. This will certainly have an impact on the future of the MCU.
The Gods Are Free
Harrow and his goons arrive at the Chamber of the Gods and kill all the avatars that we first came across in Episode 3. He then frees Ammit who by the way is visually at par with Tawaret in terms of coolness. The people who designed these two goddesses deserve applause. And the voices are what add to their characters even more. But coming back to the plot, Ammit makes Harrow her avatar which basically enables him to bring her sense of justice to the world more easily and quickly.
Layla, who is also present in the Chamber of the Gods disguised as a goon, finds out Khonshu’s ushabti, breaks it, and frees him. Khonshu states that only with the help of an avatar can Ammit be stopped and, with Marc dead, he offers Layla the choice to be his new Moon Knight, something that she straightaway denies. Thus, Khonshu confronts Ammit all by himself.
Marc Gives Up Eternal Peace
Meanwhile, Marc finds himself in the Field of Reeds, his scales having balanced at last. But Steven isn’t there anymore. This doesn’t stick with Marc who has had Steven by his side during the toughest times. Thus, disavowing the rules of the underworld, Marc Spector returns to the Duat to save Steven Grant. And who would have thought that the reunion with self could be this gratifying! In the ultimate acceptance speech, Marc admits how he is incomplete without Steven and as their hearts become one, Steven’s frozen self comes to life.
This returns Marc to our world. And clearly, Marc and Steven are a team now. Their return is sensed by Khonshu who was taking hits from Ammit all this while. Khonshu and Marc come together again and Marc becomes the Moon Knight. With his new avatar back, Khonshu takes the fight to Ammit who is on her way to “purify the souls of Cairo and then the world.”
Tawaret’s Scarlet Scarab
Back in the Chamber of Gods, Osiris’s avatar, in his last words, tells Layla that the only way to stop Ammit is to trap her in a mortal form i.e. Harrow’s. With no other option, Layla asks Tawaret for help, and Tawaret in turn makes Layla her latest avatar. Then she too arrives in Cairo to help Marc defeat Harrow.
In the comics, there is a person whose name is similar to that of Layla’s father Abdullah el Faouly. The name of this person is Abdul Faoul who would eventually become Scarlet Scarab after coming into the possession of a Ruby Scarab that provided super strength, and flight among other powers. His son Mehemet would become Scarlet Scarab, after his death. Here, we must also remind ourselves that Layla’s father used to call her “little scarab.” She also has the scarab that led Harrow to Ammit’s tomb. So, all these references do make her MCU’s Scarlet Scarab.
Scarlet Scarab and Moon Knight Imprison Ammit
While Ammit is clearly more powerful than Khonshu and is almost on the verge of killing him, Harrow gains an upper hand on Marc and is about to suck out all his powers. Layla too isn’t able to help as she is surrounded by Harrow’s goons. And just when we thought there was no way out and had no idea what will happen next, Marc blacks out and so do we. When he opens his eyes, we find all the goons dead and an unconscious Harrow lying on the ground. Neither Marc Spector nor Steven Grant knows how it all happened. As for us, we can only guess, this havoc has been caused by the same third personality of Marc whose presence we have felt earlier.
However, with Harrow not defending himself anymore, Marc and Layla take him to the Chamber of the Gods. We have no idea how they reach that location so quickly. Anyways, they chant a spell that imprisons Ammit inside Harrow. If they kill Harrow, Ammit will be destroyed as well. This is what Khonshu wants and tells Marc to do the needful. But Marc makes his choice and doesn’t do so. He has done his part of the deal and now it is Khonshu’s turn to free Marc forever. And so he does.
Moon Knight no More
The next scene in Moon Knight Episode 6 shifts to the asylum, the void that led to the Underworld. Here too, we see Marc Spector and Steven Grant working together against Dr. Harrow and ultimately fee themselves. This is symbolic of Marc and Steven freeing themselves from the Underworld, their scales perfectly balanced. Marc wakes up in Steven’s room in London, completing his journey full circle.
Jake Lockley was Always There
But all is not over. Khonshu hasn’t left. The mid-credits scene of Moon Knight shows Harrow in an asylum this time, a real one. However, he is escorted outdoors by a person who then puts him inside a limousine. Inside, surprisingly, Harrow sees Khonshu waiting for him.
The scene proves that Khonshu isn’t easy to get rid of as he introduces Harrow to the driver, the very man who escorted Harrow to the car. And it is none other than Marc Spector himself, or to speak more properly, Jake Lockley. This is the first time we see him in the entire season. It proves that Khonshu still has control over Marc, or at least on one of his alter egos, unbeknownst to him. Jake shoots Harrow and kills him; thereby proving that it was Jake who did all the killing during the moments we saw Marc black out. So, Jake was always present inside Marc. And it is also true that Khonshu knew about him but didn’t tell Marc.
The post-credits scene establishes the fact that Season 2 of Moon Knight will arrive sooner or later. And in it, Marc and Steven will have to confront their third-half, Jake Lockley. This will also lead to a conflict between Marc (and Steven) and Khonshu. Well, perhaps only Ammit knows what that will result in. But she is gone. Or is she?
Mutants in Moon Knight
When the mid-credits scene begins, a name is announced i.e., Dr. Garrison. In the comics, Dr. Sean Garrison is a popular public figure who takes a stand for mutant rights. He first appeared in #4 of 2003’s New Mutants (Volume 2). He is capable of taking control and manipulating people’s emotions and thoughts with his pheromone powers i.e. Empathetic Pheromone Toxikinesis.
If this Garrison is the one mentioned in the scene, then it proves the presence of mutants in the MCU all over again.
