Often it’s only the paparazzi and royal family enforcing the narrative. Finally, Meghan Markle and Harry have a stage with the Oprah Winfrey interview!
The Oprah Winfrey show has a history of disrupting order. This time, Oprah’s interview of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry has created quite an unrest in London. In a 30 second teaser of the episode that is to be released on Sunday, Meghan Markle is seen accusing the royal family of “perpetuating falsehood”. The video certainly won’t have amused Queen Elizabeth.
The tiff between Buckingham Palace and Meghan Markle isn’t a secret. Tensions are well-known ever since the Suits actress married Prince Harry on May 19, 2018. The differences have largely been multiplied by the British media. But now paparazzi is getting a tough fightback from the Duchess of Sussex. This time, while sitting for an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle dropped a bomb. She said, “I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time, we would still just be silent if there’s an active role that ‘The Firm’ is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us.”

The timing of the release of the video is quite interesting. Hours before the clip, the Royal Family took note of allegations against Meghan published in Times earlier this week. Former employees accuse the Duchess of bullying the royal staff while staying at the Kensington Palace in 2018. The Royal Family said that an internal investigation will be conducted.
The Bullying Accusations against Meghan Markle
The royal family might have refused to comment on remarks of Meghan in the teaser. However, the authorities have assured the palace that investigations will be carried out. They have said that they were “very concerned” about the complaints of bullying. The palace stated: “We are clearly very concerned about allegations in the Times following claims made by former staff of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Accordingly, our HR team will look into the circumstances outlined in the article…. The Royal Household has had a Dignity at Work policy in place for a number of years and does not and will not tolerate bullying or harassment in the workplace.”
So where did this allegation come from? The source of the reported “all-out war at the palace” and “unhappy families”, was a leaked email from 2018. According to the details, Meghan allegedly drove her two personal assistants out, undermining the confidence of the third.
The spokesperson of Duke and Duchess of Sussex condemned the allegations and subsequent news of investigations. “The Duchess is saddened by this latest attack on her character, particularly as someone who has been the target of bullying herself and is deeply committed to supporting those who have experienced pain and trauma.”
The Oprah interview is the latest highpoint in the rift between Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Family and Meghan Markle. Understanding it needs a brief look at Meghan’s two tumultuous years in London.
Meghan vs Royal Family Feud – A Brief History
Prince Harry announced that he wanted to marry an older, divorcee, American woman of color. Every Brit raised an eyebrow. But the lovebirds were ready to go against any odds. Despite warning that the Prince’s American lover won’t fit into the family, Harry went ahead and married Meghan. Odds played in their favor and the couple married. However, being a royal comes with a never-ending list of protocols to follow. And paparazzi to deal with.
British media has a historic, toxic obsession with Queen Elizabeth’s clan. They won’t mind hunting down royal family members for coverage even in their death. The world knows what happened with Princess Diana. And quite evidently, this wasn’t something acceptable for an American millennial woman like Meghan Markle. Someone who doesn’t just demand privacy by refusing to get clicked, but can even sue media houses for unscrupulous reporting. Meghan might have won the UK privacy lawsuit. However, urging privacy in Britain, especially a royal, is not an act applauded. Prince Harry too has expressed his contempt towards British media very often. He has a long-standing grudge against media for his mother Princess Diana‘s lifelong suffering.

The Price Harry and Meghan are having to Pay
Harry and Meghan, both have expressed their disdain for the toxic paparazzi culture of Britain. They have also opened up on how the stringent protocols of the royal family took toll on their mental health. Consequently, all the pressure culminated in them wanting a life away from the royal limelight.
But being liberal in a society like this, comes with a price. Many in the UK view Meghan as ungrateful. She has been tagged as someone who was welcomed in the upper echelon of the white Brits. Someone given a royal treatment, a palace to live in, and two world tours on taxpayers’ money only to return. Moreover, she fled to America, with their beloved prince of Windsor who shares the same belief-set as Meghan. The British upper lip couldn’t have been stiffer at this moment.
