I am sorry, the Earth is closed today
Coronavirus has impacted Earth-lings but as nature unravels its fury. Do we stand a chance?
Heads Up! COVID-19 is a warning from Mother Nature
- What led us here?
- The Earth is Living
- Nature’s Warning Shot
It’s been long that we are taking advantage of Mother Earth. It suffers for the sake of our ‘development.’ Many are of the opinion that the pandemic Coronavirus is nature’s way of getting back at us.
But is it, really?
Is this pandæmonium, the END of the world?
Some people rightfully ask, are we humans set on a path to destruction and ruin? With the Coronavirus pandemic gripping the globe and deaths surging each passing moment, the question looms on our civilization more gravely than ever.
According to Hindu mythology, this is ‘Kalyug’ the end of the world, destruction before new creation. For the Christian and the Muslims, it’s ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Qyamat’ at hand and we’re being judged for our actions. And so on…
One doesn’t know how true they are but the events around the globe has been certainly disturbing. If we only look at the start of 2020 – the earth entered the new decade amid a series of natural disasters, Australian bush fire, Amazon forest fire and is now gripped in the pandemic.
In recent memory, we have floods, tsunami, earthquakes, freak hurricanes and tornados going around the planet. The polar ice caps and glaciers are melting while the sea levels are rising.
And let’s even not go to the rampant protests and bloodshed on the planet which has now become a phenomenon called Global Protest Wave 2019.
But all that’s on hold now, it doesn’t even matter, the Earth is closed you see! It’s coronavirus times.
We, humans, are hiding from a virus that has not only engulfed people but business, and nations. The internet, basically the entire manmade capitalistic structure. And we can’t do anything about it, can’t even find a cure as of now!
Imagine, even in the same room staying 6 feet away from our loved ones is ensuring they live!
As a civilization, what have we come down to? If the last 50 years of development brings us to such catastrophes, its time the world order rethinks its idea of ‘progress’.
What led us here?
With the Industrial revolution came our development. The machines changed our life for the better. While easing out human lives it also started taking a toll on the planet.
Humans put too much pressure on the natural world. Since the machine age, the planet has sacrificed its resources like water, land, trees, minerals, oil and more for us.
Humans crossed boundaries while setting up factories deep into the jungles, cutting trees and polluting the land in developments wake. Global heating and the destruction of the natural world for farming, mining and housing led to the loss of animal habitats.
A virus, like COVID-19, is coming out of those destructive habitats. Wuhan’s wet-market is only a means to the end, for nature’s destructive ways. We, through our own doing, gave access to pathogens to come in contact with humans.
According to the UN’s environment chief, Inger Andersen, ‘Never before have so many opportunities existed for pathogens to pass from wild and domestic animals to people.’
According to experts, 75 per cent of emerging infectious diseases come from wildlife. The outbreak of viral infections like SARS, MERS, Ebola, Nipah—all has been the warning signals for another outbreak we aren’t ready for.
And clearly we weren’t!
The Earth is Living
With the world in lockdown, no humans in sight, Mother Nature is finally breathing. Interestingly, coronavirus’ impact on Earth seems positive in regards to climate change. There is a significant reduction in carbon footprints due to travel bans and factories shut. In absence of humans, the water in Venice has cleared up, in India, Olive Ridley turtles are returning to Odisha beaches to nest. The air in one of the most polluted cities in the world, Delhi is breathable nowadays, there’s fog NOT smog!
The Earth is a living ecosystem. It interacts with us — this is no tripper’s mojo. According to the Gaia Hypothesis, the planet isn’t an inanimate interstellar body inhabited by animate life forms, but a live organism that regulates and controls its own destiny by corrective measures.
Hence, it restores its balance like, it’s doing now. And when injustice is done to Mother Earth, it is punished as irrevocably as crime is punished in the court of law.
Mother Nature’s dispassionate killings and simultaneous restoration almost sounds like how Thanos wanted it… everything in perfect balance, as it should be.
Maybe, its Nature decimating us and we are living in the blip. Think about it!
COVID-19 A Warning Shot
WHO experts recently announced nature is sending us a message while mentioning that ‘Covid-19 is a clear warning shot.’
But history proves humans fail to pay heed to warnings. The 2002-2003 SARS Outbreak saw many lives lost and had a huge economic impact on the globe. Prof Andrew Cunningham, of the Zoological Society of London, feels the same “After SARS was controlled there was a huge sigh of relief and everything was back to business as usual. We cannot go back to business as usual, now” he says.
While we sit at home waiting for it go ‘normal’, there’s a chance that there might not be a ‘normal.’ COVID-19 has shown us how insignificant and helpless we are when Nature unleashes its fury!
Coming back to will we survive the coronavirus’ impact on the Earth… take a guess!
