Earlier this year, superhero fans around the world got the best gift amid an ongoing pandemic – Zack Snyder’s Justice League cut. A long-standing battle between WB and Snyder fans around the world found its victor in numerous faceless fans.
The year 2021 will surely see the superhero fantasy drama unfolding on HBO Max. A masterstroke by WB to keep fans engaged year-round while cementing the HBO platform equivalent to established competition viz Netflix and Amazon Prime. While WB lost to fans the streaming war has its own cost. Reportedly, Zack Snyder’s Justice League Cut is costing the production giant around an additional $30 Billion.

Existence of the Snyder Cut
Currently, the fabled cut is nothing more than a fable. Technically it doesn’t exist as a feature production stringed together. What Snyder has is a vision and a rough cut that was showcased to WB executives before tragedy struck. While any other information about the feature is scarce, according to studio executives it is set to premiere between early to mid-2021. Furthermore, it is also uncertain whether it will be a 4-hour long cut or a mini-series with cliff hangers!
What we know is that still remains a lot of post-production work that Snyder and his team need to finish. As HBO Max boss Bob Greenblatt revealed on a podcast, “It is a radical rethinking of [Justice League] and it’s complicated and wildly expensive.” Explaining how it won’t be a slapped-together re-cut of the 2017 movie the feature will need new VFX shots, voiceovers et al. He further explained, “It isn’t as easy as going into the vault and there’s a Snyder Cut there to put out,” Greenblatt said. “It does not exist. Zack is building it and its complex.”

The New JL Tease
Joss Wheadon’s 2017 Justice League brought Steppenwolf and his Para-demons as antagonists of the heroic tale. Wherein Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) assemble Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and Aquaman (Jason Momoa). Variety dubbed the movie as an act of franchise penance. Further, Steppenwolf was dubbed as a weak villain by several critics.
However, times changed and for good. Snyder over the years has teased several villains and other JL plans so that fans have a pretty good idea of which villains to expect. Rather than dampening the anticipation of the movie. Knowing what the director has in mind is only raising fans excitement.

While an official teaser trailer is due from the studio, Snyder last week gave fans a tease of his most anticipated villain Darkseid. The trailer features Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman standing in some sort of a temple/cave in front of a Darkseid image. In the background, we hear the voice of Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
For years Snyder has been posting about his original intended villain for Justice League. The 2017 Justice League left out his story on the editing floor. Now fans are more than ever excited about the league facing Darkseid in HBO’s version. But that’s not it.
When it comes to Snyder’s spine-chilling, dark storytelling format, he has numerous other villains in store for his penultimate superhero fantasy drama.
Let’s start with what went wrong, first! Steppenwolf was always intended to be the general of Apokolips force. But he wasn’t meant to carry the whole film on his shoulder. Wheadon’s lighter take messed up the character further.

From what one can understand from Snyder’s version, he is more menacing and monstrous. The theatrical version of the Justice League also left out his other worthy companions that might make a return.
While the character only appeared in the post-credits scene of the theatrical version, actor Jesse Eisenberg confirmed that he shot more scenes for the movie. In Snyder’s work, Lex Luthor’s journals will play an important role, paving a gateway to the invasion from Apokolips.
Snyder also mentioned the importance of Lex Luthor for Darkseid’s plans. However, his presence also makes way for another important antagonist!
Deathstroke only appeared at the end credits of the theatrical version with Lex Luthor. His prominence in Snyder’s vision was different due to many reasons. In the original plan, he would still appear only in the end credits scene but it would have established him as the main villain for Ben Affleck’s planned Batman solo movie.
Darkseid’s Invasion Force aka The Family
Neither Snyder’s reveals nor his Justice League cut so far mentions any Apokolipitic character apart from Darkseid, Desaad and Steppenwolf. In his words, there was still room for his “massive invasion force (aka the whole family)”. That simply means that the Snyder cut can still feature Darkseid’s daughter Grail and his sons Grayven, Kalibak.
With so many antagonist characters on the spectrum in 2021, Justice League: Snyder Cut can be a genre-defining movie. Given the fans are already amused with the characters coupled with the fact that their appetite has only grown for the genre.
And as far as WB is concerned, in times when Michael Keaton is set to return as Batman, anything is now possible in DCEU!
