Ice Bucket Challenge and Water crisis – Akshay Kumar’s cry for a spotlight
Ice Bucket Challenge aimed to collect donations for ALS Organisation proves to be Irrational and unsuccessful. Among many prominent personalities who took the challenge – In India – it was led by Akshay Kumar.
ALS Association which fights Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a rare neurodegenerative disease introduced a challenge for the public five years ago. A movement went viral in the United States, which saw people getting a bucket of ice dumped on their heads. Some also donated money. In India, Akshay Kumar led the way for celebrities in Ice Bucket Challenge.
Akshay Kumar, as per of Ice Bucket Challenge, took 11 buckets of Sea Water with Ice dumped on him by several volunteers in a climate of 8-degree Celcius. Sounds Heroic – Yes. But it lacks diligence, conscious fact-checking, integrity and a sense of common sense. It seems these celebrities do not use their brains too often and take thoughtless actions just to keep themselves in the eyes of people. Anything for maintaining stardom influence it seems.
Irrational actions without conscious fact-checking can be disastrous. And Akshay and Co. are the prime examples.
Viability of Ice Bucket Challenge
Irrational Ice Bucket Challenge, backed by famous celebrities, garnered $115 million and around $220 million globally. ALS Association was ecstatic with collections, well they received more than double of their annual budget. Then what is the problem?
When a Non-Profit organisation collects more donations it generally is a good thing. But, not always. Sometimes it leads Non-Profits to a vicious paradox.
When the amount received is small, it is easier to manage because it is only being engaged in certain projects. However, when the amount received is enormous, the Non-Profits feel compulsive to launch new projects. This mostly stirs them away from their fundamental line-of-work and they end up launching not so effective projects.
We are running a deficit of several million each year, even as we have taken on multi-year commitments to clinics and research studies.ALS Association
Backed by pressure to succeed, the ALS Association suffered a similar crisis. The officials of the association, when asked about how they’d spent the money received, cited that they need cash reserves to ensure they meet their commitments to the ALS community. The association revealed that they were running a deficit of seven million each year.
Coping with ALS
Undoubtedly ALS association did a great job of the money they received. Local chapters were able to purchase equipment for ALS patients like power wheelchairs, walkers, and shower benches. The waitlist that had existed throughout the program’s 20-year history disappeared. All of it after the enormous contributions through the Ice Bucket Challenge.
However, most of the money — $80 million — went to research. It didn’t even bring a dent as taking a drug from initial stages to FDA approval and trials, costs around $2 billion.
Celebrities lacking Integrity
A celebrity has an expansive responsibility for maintaining their own stardom influence. Otherwise, fans waiting in lines would soon begin to disappear. It seems Akshay Kumar was just trying to abide by the underlying principle of maintaining stardom when he accepted the dare of Ice Bucket Challenge. A task which involved 11 buckets of Ice-Sea water simultaneously, with an outside temperature of 8-degree Celcius.

Akshay Kumar also urged many of his friends and colleagues to join him in the Ice Bucket Challenge. But what is the real story behind Akshay’s adventurous endeavor?
Ice Bucket Challenge saw many personalities including Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos taking the dare. However, they also made significant donations to the charity. Not just to spread awareness. The then U.S. President Barack Obama refused the challenge but donated instead.
On the other hand, Indian Celebrities without factual checking took to social media and involved themselves in a U.S. based trend, for the sake of growing fanbase. Meanwhile wasting precious water.
We wish – Common Sense and some sort of integrity – for these so-called celebrities, who lead the way for the whole society!
Akshay Kumar’s Donation for Water Conservation
After a public display of water wastage by several celebrities, Akshay Kumar again led the way into another trend. Ironically, this time for Water Conservation. He donated 50 lakh rupees for Water Conservation, following the trend set by Hollywood Star Leonardo Dicaprio.
Leonardo Dicaprio is an environmentalist since his early childhood. He has collaborated with several social organisations to protect the climate and conserve wildlife and marine life.
Akshay’s fans would like to see him take some initiative by himself. Though he is a regular donor, with more than 10 crores worth of donations already in 2019. However, he must take a firm individual stand and progress in the same line. Instead of emerging on every trending topic to accolade limelight upon himself.
