As the countdown to DC FanDome begins fans are anticipating what the studio has in store in the 24-hour- long virtual event. While Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Matt Reeve’s The Batman have gotten fans very excited Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam too has started to make some noise. Fans have waited for a long time to see Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as Black Adam but given WB’s fan-pleasing attitude this year we might get Henry Cavill’s Superman too in the mix

Initially, Black Adam was to be introduced as the antagonist for Shazam years ago before Henry Cavill spun DECU was born. WB and DC approached Johnson in 2008 for the iconic role for a different iteration of the Shazam. However, later the studio felt he was good enough to shoulder a solo movie, Johnson waited for 10 years to play the part. In a previous interview, he said, “Black Adam has been with me for over ten years now. That gives you an idea of how passionate I am about this project.”
The Man in Black
On Friday Johnson gave fans first tease of the new villain Black Adam along with DC FanDome teaser. A release date has been set for 21 December 2021, casting news is trickling in. While there is no plot details available the actor revealed last fall that the movie is about the Justice Society of America. For the uninitiated, DC’s JSA was the first superhero team of the comics including several heroes like Spectrum, Sandman, Atom Smasher, Green Lantern, Hawkman and more.
While Noah Centineo is confirmed to play Atom Smasher, rumours suggest Michael B Jordan is being eyed to play Hawkman while Hawkgirl, Doctor Fate and Stargirl could also make an appearance in the movie. That’s a lot of news for fans in a very short span of time and now their speculations are rife.
Since the beginning of the year, DC is keeping fans on a roller coaster with new surprises every now and then. It all started with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel watch party he threw with Superman himself Henry Cavill. After the movie, he announced the release of his Justice League Snyder Cut on HBO Max. Next came news from the Batman but not Ben Affleck or Robert Pattinson but OG caped crusader Michael Keaton making a return. The news took fans by surprise and speculations of a Batman Beyond storyline are rife. Next came another off the bat Batman news from Matt Reeves when he announced an HBO spin-off for Pattinson’s Dark Knight. Outside of DCEU Reeves is building his own Bat-verse, if we may say.

With so much going on and other projects like Wonder Woman 1987, Black Adam, The Flash, Suicide Squad 2 and its streaming and TV productions – DC decided to hold its own virtual convention this year.
No Superman in The Mix
With so much buzz going around Superman fans are eagerly waiting for any official news while some are busy speculating his potential DC future. Right after Zack Snyder’s watch party Variety had come up with an insider report about Cavill being in talks with the WB reprise his role as Kal-El in a cameo. Well, it’s hard to believe WB will let go of Cavill’s dimple-chinned dashingness and carefully engineered physique for a role as iconic as Superman.

Last year Henry Cavill spoke to Men’s Health about donning the cape again and confirmed, “The cape is in the closet. It’s still mine.” Further adding,
“I’m not just going to sit quietly in the dark as all this stuff is going on. I’ve not given up the role. There’s a lot I have to give for Superman yet. A lot of storytelling to do. A lot of real, true depths to the honesty of the character I want to get into.”
So isn’t it quite odd that while a storm is brewing in DC universe Superman is missing in action? Fans are expecting a big Superman announcement from DC FanDome. While some speculate the ‘secret DC project announcement’ is about the Man of Steel. Others speculate Superman’s return via Black Adam movie based on the rumoured cameo.
Black Adam – Superman: Battle of The Century
What gets fans excited is not only the thought of Henry Cavill’s Superman going toe to toe with Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam but also the fact that WB had plans for it back in day before JL failed. Given the friendship Johnson and Cavill share further makes fans believe only the Rock can get Superman to don the cape again. The two even shared a confrontation between the two characters on social media several times and Johnson is apparently a big fan of Superman.
This coupled with eagle-eyed fans noticing Man of Tomorrow releasing August 23rd, day after DC Fandome has gotten expectations higher. Recently multiple Superman projects are picking up like Man of Steel being added to Netflix in several countries in August. New Suicide Squad game focused around Superman. There’s a new Superman and Lois TV show. Seem like WB’s creating groundwork for Cavill’s return. We’ll know for sure during DC FanDome on August 22.
