Is President Trump for America or against America? Hard to say…
After leaving the decision to reopen the American Economy to Governors, Trump is provoking the COVIDIOTS protest against state lockdown in the US with his Tweets.
In the United States, demonstrations have occurred calling on authorities to end the shutdown in Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, Minnesota, Utah, Virginia, and Kentucky. Financially frustrated people have taken to the Covidiot way, protesting against the state lockdown in a bid reopen the economy and start earning their bread again.
Over the weekend in a series of tweets, Trump provocatively wrote, “LIBERATE MINNESOTA”, “LIBERATE MICHIGAN” and then “LIBERATE VIRGINIA”. In a pandemic struck America, social distancing and lockdown observed to curb the spread of the coronavirus is now being flouted widely.
His Tweets were in support of the protests amid shelter-in-place orders. However, the three places he wants to ‘liberate’ are all led by Democratic Governors.
Donald Trump is stroking a dangerous revolution that can have grave consequences.
As a result of Trump fueling the fire, masses came out of their homes to protest. When asked about his tweets during the press briefings, he said that Minnesota’s, Michigan’s, and Virginia’s measures had been ‘too tough’ on people.
Trump’s plan to reopen the American economy
Trump has been pushing to reopen the American economy for some time now. The crashing economy will be one of the primary issues of the upcoming November election. More than 22 million Americans have filed for unemployment and small businesses are suffering the most.
Trump has plans to reopen the American Economy in phases. Last week, the US President proposed guidelines to ease the restrictions in areas with low transmission while keeping them in place for harder hit locations.
Furthermore, places with a decline in infection and strong testing measures will gradually reopen schools and businesses in phases. The reopening will take place in three phases lasting 14 days each to contain any virus acceleration.
It is clear that the return to new ‘normalcy’ will take longer than Trump expected. Some preventive measures will be practiced until the end of the year.
After the briefing, he told the state Governors, “You’re going to call your own shots.” Leaving them to decide when it is safe to open their economies.
Trump’s real plans
Trump can’t force the Governors to open their states but he can surely influence the masses to protest. However, since the lockdown has brought out the underlying inequalities in society, divisive politics threatens to fire up in the coming months.
Some people remain unaffected by the lockdown, working from home, able to keep their jobs and pay rent. While some Covidiots heeded to Trump’s liberation call, some could just see right through it. Like the grandma below:
And some other people have seen the worst – death, unemployment and economic frustration since the outbreak. The protestors on the street are hurting people waiting for the economy to reopen so they can put bread on their table.
The absence of Republican-led states in Trump’s tweets is an indication of his influence on his supporters in other states. As BBC’s Anthony Zurcher puts it, “Mr. Trump may be seeking to encourage his political base to protest against Democrats.”
In his defense, Trump said he was ‘very comfortable’ making those posts. Ignoring the fact that Covidiot protests have defied the social distancing protocol, Trump remains firm on his stance. He unapologetically said he was ‘not worried’ about those protesting against shelter-in-place order.
Finally, Trump’s tweet provoking Covidiot demonstrations against state lockdown in the US is his way of blaming Democrats for the economic fallout.
