In his Justice Con panel, Darkseid actor Ray Porter spoke about being the big, bad but ignored villain of Justice League… and, of course, Thanos.
The fan-organised Justice Con over the weekend gave us a good look of Zack Snyder’s original vision. The director gave fans a teeny tiny but much-awaited clip of Superman’s black suit. But apart from him, fans got a good look into Snyder’s arch-villain Darkseid.
Initially, Darkseid, played by actor Ray Porter, was the main villain of the Justice League. When Snyder stepped down from his directorial duties due to the tragedy, Joss Whedon took the liberty to leave the mighty villain out on the editing floor. Instead of Darkseid, Steppenwolf was elevated to be the main villain cutting Porter’s role.
Zack Snyder emphasised on the fact that he isn’t going to use any frame that he didn’t photograph. Meaning all of Whedon’s work will be left out of his cut. With Snyder again at the helm of his project Darkseid will take his honourable position as DC’s most formidable baddie!
Ray Porter’s Darkseid
Porter explained during the panel that he gets to know about Snyder’s Justice League Cut just like everyone else via the watch party. About the time when his role was cut from the movie he said, “It was hard. I was in the movie, then I wasn’t. I still had to keep quiet because of the NDA [non-disclosure agreement].”

He further elaborated the character of Darkseid in the upcoming Justice League. He admits the character is daunting and badass but with a twist. He said, “Darkseid doesn’t see himself as the villain. He believes in what he’s doing.” This puts the character equivalent to MCU’s Thanos, who just wanted to bring the balance to the universe.
On fans asking who’d be more formidable, Thanos or Darkseid; Porter calmly declares, “Darkseid would win because he doesn’t need a special gauntlet.” Porter’s answer gave Twitter a field day with various memes and the savagery of the entire situation.
Thanos Vs Darkseid – The Battle of Generations
It’s no wonder fans are asking this question. The comparison goes as far as the Marvel DC comic book rivalry days. Generations of comic book readers have had the same question… and belief as Ray Porter.
Darkseid is the creation of artist Jack Kirby from his days at DC. The ruler of the Apokolips is pure hatred incarnated. He is a tyrant who demands unwavering devotion from his subjects. His eyes emit the Omega rays, glimpse of which we’ll get to see in upcoming Justice League. Even Ray Porter has affirmed that he is most excited about the ray beams which could destroy, teleport, or resurrect on Darkseid’s whim.
Back to the history lesson though, Kirby created the character for his New Gods story line however, Marvel artist Jim Starlin, copied the character and named him Thanos. Their obsession with bringing the balance, with death, servitude and the sense of doing the right thing while committing genocide; makes Thanos and Darkseid the same character. So generations of fans over the years have debated who is more powerful.
The Real Darkseid Vs Thanos Battle
However, now it seems like the debate will start again and the battle can only be won by CGI. Actor Josh Brolin famously played the Mad Titan Thanos in Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga. While he got the fate he deserved there’s a huge section of fans who believe Thanos did nothing wrong!
A heavily CGI-ed Brolin’s performance was balanced. He has a certain ‘cold, all knowing vibe’ that made the character terrifying and ruthless. While director duo Russo brothers got the best out of him, rumours are that there’s more to his story.

A look at Snyder’s teased image of Darkseid and we can see how much amount of work would have gone into the character. Porter further affirms that process of filming Darkseid was as daunting as the villain himself. He did voice work and body movements separately. He said, “I was in England towards the end of the movie. A majority of it had already been shot,” he recalled. “Then I flew to Los Angeles to shoot mo-cap and face capture.”
Given the magnitude and hype Justice League created, Zack Snyder and Ray Porter have big responsibility to deliver. It’s well known that the WB-owned DC isn’t really known for their CGI work. Whereas Marvel has certain mastery in that domain.
So this time despite fan favour, Snyder has found worthy competition in Thanos. He better not disappoint.
