Free Wi-Fi can positively and directly influence public life of Delhi. It is indeed a praiseworthy step towards developing Delhi as a technologically advanced city.
Yesterday, AAP fulfilled its long-standing manifesto promise of Free Wi-Fi for Delhi’s residents. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal announced free Wi-Fi hotspots for the Aam Aadmi. The announcement puts Delhi in an elite list of metropolitan cities of the world such as Seoul, Perth, Hong Kong, Macau, Paris, Tel Aviv, New York, Boston, Osaka, Barcelona, Wellington, and Moscow.
The scheme will flag off from the 16th of December. In the first phase, the govt. will implement 100 hotspots in the city. The remaining 11,000 Wi-Fi hotspots will be covered within 6 months across the National Capital. Kejriwal said that the Delhi government will add 500 free public Wi-Fi hotspots every week and complete the task within the promised allotted time.
Connecting all public amenities
Furthermore, the Delhi government will install 4,000 hotspots at bus stops and the remaining 7,000 at various markets, residential welfare association and other places across Delhi. Moreover, at a single time, every hotspot will be able to provide free internet to around 200 people.
The most amazing fact is that every user will be eligible to use 15 GB Data (high-speed, i.e. 200Mbps) per month. The Wi-Fi hotspot will cover a range of 50 meters. This Wi-Fi scheme is expected to cost around Rs 100 crore to Delhi Government. The Wi-Fi scheme is also based on a rental model. This means the Delhi government will pay the monthly rental to those companies hired to handle the hotspot.
Free Wi-Fi Benefits: Life transformation for Delhi’s Aam Aadmi
In the 21st century, we need internet and connectivity to be accessible through every inch of public spaces as well as those areas with limited connectivity. Not every citizen can afford 4G connectivity (more so when the free illusion of Jio is now over).
People are well aware of the deteriorating connection quality provided by Telecom operators. The free Wi-Fi scheme also holds the potential for connecting every citizen. It will reduce the barriers between the rich and the poor. Free public-private Wi-Fi facilities will connect both men and machines, inadvertently improving government services in Delhi.
Benefits that the Aam Aadmi of Delhi will enjoy from Free Wi-Fi:
For Women Safety
We cannot predict the occurrence of an emergency. It can surprise us anywhere anytime. We all know how this so-called ‘civil society’ is inhuman and helpless towards people in need. Crime cases, especially against women, are a constant menace everywhere.
Through Wi-Fi connectivity, people in contingency situations can inform their dear ones by sending their location and safety status. It can thereby strengthen and quicken up the search and rescue operations. So, it is a gift to every sister, daughter, and mother.
Benefits to Students and underprivileged class
People arrive in Delhi to find jobs and education from every corner of India. Increasing tariffs by big private telecoms, limited data usage per day and slow speeds are issues limiting people’s productivity.
Youth and students especially stand to benefit through free public Wi-Fi as increasing tariff prices for some are beyond affordability. Free Wi-Fi will help students in Delhi easily access online courses, e-books, and will facilitate distance courses too.
Benefits in Catastrophe situations and natural disasters
In catastrophe situations and natural disasters, when mobile networks and connectivity are lost for hours and sometimes days, free public Wi-Fi can work wonders and help people by connecting them with their loved ones.
Focusing on the corporate sectors’ viewpoint, free Wi-Fi could facilitate their employees’ efficiency ensuring connectivity and good internet speed while traveling. An easy and free access is essential for the lower and middle class residing in the national capital.
Free public Wi-Fi will also help people in developing their skills and discover new opportunities in business. Internet availability will widen market prospects and initiate learning platforms.
Will Benefit Travelers
Delhi is a tourist place, especially for archaeologists, history, art, and culture lovers. Most foreign tourists find it difficult while traveling around in the city. Through public Wi-Fi and many Apps, the traveling experience in Delhi will be further enhanced.
Delhi becomes a Smart City
Finally, Free Wi-Fi will transform Delhi into a Smart City, not through BJP’s much-promoted but now forgotten Smart Cities Mission from 2014, but by AAP’s diligent and true promise to voters in 2015.
