Protests have been a constant in Modi 2.0. Unhappy citizens keep coming on the streets raising their angst against Modi government’s policies. Similarly, Government’s hardline stances, strong clampdowns, coupled with police brutality as well as police incapability are part of the theme. The latest incident of an outside mob running riot unchecked in India’s top educational institution Jawaharlal Nehru University is an act of criminal police incapability.
Why Delhi Police is under the microscope?
In JNU’s case, it was confirmed that masked goons were beating students and teachers inside. Still, the police was lax and let the vandalism and brutality take place.
For hours afterwards, Police personnel refused to open the University gates. They waited for the permission from the JNU administration instead of promptly responding to reports of violence.
As a consequence, there was unprecedented and unchecked rampage. The Delhi Police has been unable to apprehend any of the goons, which eyewitnesses have numbered to 50 or more. The Delhi Police falls directly under the Home Ministry headed by Amit Shah.
Why Amit Shah should resign?
PM Modi’s second tenure saw the entry of Amit Shah into the cabinet, holding the senior-most portfolio. In the six months of Shah in charge of the country, violence against peaceful protesting citizens has been the highlight. The Delhi Police, along with Ajay Bisht’s UP Police stand out. Police has been ruthless in some situations, ignoring the distinction between the perpetrators and victims. In other cases, they have been criminally inefficient.
Misadministration is rampant and media manipulation has reached unprecedented heights. During last nights, horrific hooliganism, the police exercised restraint in a situation that warranted urgency. The move is also being called out as a ploy to delegitimize and scare future student movements. Furthermore, Shah’s Home Ministerialship has seen the trust in Delhi police among citizens hit rock bottom.
Consequently, social media has been abuzz with calls for India’s Home Minister Amit Shah to resign.
