Enola Holmes bested her brother Sherlock and we aren’t surprised
Netflix’s Enola Holmes is a fine offering. The young adult thriller is a good movie with plenty of room for a sequel in making. Millie Bobby Brown (Enola) and Henry Cavill (Sherlock) shines in their roles but Sam Claflin (Mycroft) is the real treat in the movie. Together with Helena Bonham Carter as their mother, Eudoria the movie touches upon many imperative issues.

Enola Holmes In The Sherlock Franchise
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s creation has intrigued the fans for generations. The cynical, distant, genius detective has fans across the globe. Over the years there have been numerous Sherlock incarnations. However, for the millennial cinema, Guy Ritchie planed and adapted 2009s Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr in the titular role with Jude Law as Watson. Both 2009 Sherlock and 2011 Sherlock: A Game of Shadows does a great job of keeping the audience on their toes. The clues are cleverly laid throughout the script and we see an indigenous performance by Downey Jr who is both the narrator and the central character of the movie. Ritchie cinematically told us the story from Sherlock’s perspective with on-screen visuals coupled with Sherlock’s inner monologue. The Sherlock Watson pair returns next year for the final installment in the franchise sans Ritchie.

Apart from Downey Jr, Benedict Cumberbatch plays the other iteration of the character on BBC’s famous series Sherlock. The slow burning detective drama is more apt to create the layers of one mystery over other. The intertwining of the Sherlock universe is more expanse and characters obviously better fleshed out given four seasons long screen time. The series departs from the Victorian setting and takes the contemporary way. However, in one bonus Halloween episode the show visited the Vintage England.
Enola, however, is a spin-off on her brother Sherlock. Author Nancy Springer writes the Enola Holmes books. Hers’ is modern take at heart that draws from the fictional world created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Enola is a free-spirited, sharp, courageous girl who believes that perhaps it is the world that needs changing not the women. Nonetheless with that Enola stands taller than Cavill’s Sherlock in the movie and also from her other Sherlock counterparts.
The New Age Role Model
In Netflix’s behind the scene video Millie Bobby Brown admits that she wanted to give her young audience a new role model and she did. Her acting chops make the fourth wall breakage – a rather risky move – interesting! She engages the audience with her antics and does an excellent job of narrating the story. It is like a video diary that we all want to keep.

Another good thing about the script is that Enola is often beaten black and blue, and defeated in many scenes. It is not only stunts packed in the story to make her look cool; something that the predecessors can be rather accused of. She sobs when Mycroft yells at her, she gets tired in a fight, she cannot even ride a bicycle! Harry Bradbeer has encapsulated many highs and lows of a woman’s life in small moments.
And yes, Sherlock definitely takes a backseat in this one. Cavill lights up the screen in his every take. He is emotional (which is unnecessary!) and keeps a keen eye out on his sister. While there are reflections of Sherlock in his performance – the character needed more screen time and fleshing out! Nonetheless, Henry as Sherlock is a snack!
On the other hand, Sam Claflin as Mycroft shines through his performance. He embodies the strange creature that your family members are. Society fearing, patriarchic, loving you in their own twisted ways wanting what they know is the best for you but might not make the right decisions! Moreover, that performance is the precise reason he stands out. Helena Bonham Carter, well she is lovely on-screen and is the whacky mother every girl needs but she is also the case of limited screen time like Cavill.
Put together Enola Holmes is a family tale that is full of exceptional detectives! Enola Holmes sells the same brand of thrill and excitement that made Downey Jr and Cumberbatch icons just with a side dose of feminism. Gen Z has another Holmes in the store that is shaper, more exciting, and takes a leap of reinterpretation that its predecessors could not!
