In fact, his mother Maye Musk claims that she had identified his genius when he was just a three-year-old toddler. Nevertheless, an abusive household and a terrible father could have marred Musk’s genius into oblivion had it not been for his mother’s unflinching determination to help her children realize their full potential.

Computer Programmer at 10
Musk was no ordinary child. He developed an interest in computer coding and programming from an early age. It is virtually impossible to digest, but Elon Musk learned programming at the age of 10 in a matter of mere three days.
Entrepreneur at 12
As soon as Musk grew proficient in programming, the tech-freak started creating his own software. Still living in South Africa, Elon Musk built is first video game aged 12 called ‘Blastar’. He sold the original game source code to PC Magazine for $500 which it published in a 1984 edition. It never became an official game, till Google software engineer Tomas Lloret decided to convert it into one after 30 years.
The Elon Musk Club
Musk’s childhood was difficult. Maye Musk had to bring up three children as a single mother which meant money was never surplus. As the eldest kid, Elon stepped up, partially supporting the family and his own education through small-time endeavours. One such was the Elon Musk Nightclub. While in college, Musk couldn’t afford to pay the rent to his apartment. Therefore, he came to an innovative idea, rented a 10 bedroom frat house, and transformed it into a club. This innovative idea helped Elon Musk to get through his college journey.
While studying at the University of Pennsylvania, Elon Musk pursued and completed a double major in physics and economics from the Wharton School. He then moved to Stanford University to further degrees but decided to drop out within the first week.

Millionaire at 22
Musk’s first proper big-time venture was the Zip2 Corporation. A Digital City Guid that was co-founded by him alongside his brother Kimbal Musk and on Greg Kouri. Zip2 soon became a popular content provider for brands like the New York TImes and Chicago Tribune. It was eventually acquired by Compaq Computer for $307 million. At the age of 22, Musk became a millionaire with $22 million in his shares.
The PayPal Mafia, More Millions
After Zip2, Musk co-founded a payments service called X.com which later merged with Confinity to form PayPal. Elon Musk was among the “PayPal Mafia”, group of prominent PayPal employees and founders. When PayPal was acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion, Musk earned $108 million in his shares.
Next Stop — Space
Using the fortune worth millions that he earned from the acquisitions, Elon Musk founded the Space Exploration Technology Corp., or SpaceX. The odds were against him and the operations faced grave failures for more than a decade. But determination and will power won and SpaceX is all set to accomplish its mission Mars.
The Musk Foundation
Apart from entrepreneurial ventures, Elon Musk is also the promoter of the causes he believes in. The Musk Foundation which was founded in 2002, provided financial and research support in the areas of his interest- renewable energy, human space exploration, pediatric research, science, and engineering, etc. Till now, the foundation has donated close to $300 million for causes like disaster relief and sustainable innovation.
The Tesla Turn
In the year 2004, Elon Musk went on to become the CEO of Tesla from the chairman of the board of directors. Musk’s full-time appointment proved pivotal for Tesla’s future. His engineering skills and business acumen helped the company steer failures and cash crunches. In the year 2008, Tesla launched its first electric car model, the Tesla Roadster. This was when the ideological shift surrounding electric vehicles was beginning to gain momentum. Tesla started marching at the forefront of the revolution and slowly and steadily on the upward graph of growth.
$1 Billion NASA Contract
Saved SpaceX. With multiple launch failures in a row, SpaceX finally launched a rocket successfully in the year 2008. However, the company was already on the verge of bankruptcy by then. Fortunately, NASA signed a contract with SpaceX the same year worth $1 Billion to carry supplies to the International Space Station. This can rightly be called the second-life of SpaceX.

Under Giving Pledge, billionaires pledge to donate majority of their fortune for the greater good of society. In 2012, Musk joined the esteemed league of Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Azim Premji among others to commit to donate half of his wealth to charity. Musk came up with an unprecedented idea to democratize space and make logistics much more cost viable. In 2015, SpaceX finally launched a reusable rocket in space, revolutionizing space exploration forever. Things escalated really quick and within two years, Elon Musk surpassed all the billionaires. When 2020 started Musk was valued at $27 Billion.
