With exit polls for 2019 elections out, the public of democratic India is on toes. The channels are buzzing with hot headed debates and fiery discussions amongst the so-called-intellectuals.
Majority of exit polls might have forecasted a bright future for Modi led regime with 300+ seats, but the failed predictions of 2004 and 2009 gives the opposition a flicker of hope. The nation is holding its breathe to see if Modi wave will be back or not.
Before we dive deep into the future let’s take a look back at all that the NDA government promised and delivered (Or didn’t) in the past 5 years.
This policy was initially designed to combat terror funding, fake notes and black money but also lead to widespread havoc and unemployment in the nation.
Goods and services tax (GST)
The biggest reform for the Indian economy came in 2017 and took India by a storm. The bold policy created a common market and got rid of different sales taxes for different states in India all the while slamming India’s large informal sector.
Foreign direct investment (FDI)
The new lax policies for foreign investors led to the increase of $61.96 billion in 2017-2018 further increasing an all-time high of $60.1 billion in 2016-2017.
Growth in defaulted loans (NPA) in Banking System
The non-performing assets or bad assets are the loans given by banks to companies that remain unpaid. Names like Vijay Mallya or Nirav Modi might jog your memory. NPA under NDA have risen by 6.2 lakh crore between 2015-18.
Pulwama and Uri attacks are well by people of India. And the Indian response to them are well known by the people of world. While some may call this bold response a well needed one, others may define them as too violent.
The Modi government’s record in job creation was particularly surprising, since NDA gave way to the much heralded Make in India. Unemployment rose to a 45-year high, according to a leaked report from India’s National Sample Survey Organization.
This act termed as a draconian act by its opposition, meant to make the processes like public distribution system, employment guarantee schemes, cash transfers to the poor, and opening bank account easier. But ended up in a controversy related to right to privacy.
The campaign entailed online infrastructure and increased Internet connectivity. There has been 96% fall in the cost of mobile data under NDA and over 35% of Indians have access to the internet.
The 2016 10-day stone pelting riot was one bloody event that no one can easily forget. Along with this the eight month long curfews and the 72% increase in the martyred soldiers just add on to the declining state of Kashmir overall.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
The most lauded initiative of NDA to clean up the streets, roads and infrastructure of India’s cities, towns, and rural areas along with solving the problem of open defecation managed to reach far and wide. Yet there exists criticism regarding it’s sustainability.
Agricultural Development and Farmer Woes
The manifesto 0f 2014 promised to increase the profits for farmers by 50% over the cost of production. While The APMC Act reforms did take place and managed to bring some relief to the agricultural workers, farmer’s suicide, crop insurance issues and loans still remains a bleeding wound.
Before 2014 victory, promises were made to curtail the illegal infiltration from Bangladesh into India. NRC was one of the weapon used against this fight. However the implementation of it in Assam created a havoc for people and received a lot of backlash from the citizens.
A lot more work to do?
The promises were made and promises were broken. If the NDA manages to hold the reigns of power again then these policy failures can act as stepping stones for next 5 years, and if not then the opposition has lot to learn from their enemies drawbacks.
