While the world is still grappling with the COVID-19 crisis and the mainstream media is covering the death toll and the impeding recession in detail, there have been some debates around sexual assault allegations against Joe Biden.
Biden, who has served the nation as Vice President in the past and is the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, was accused of sexually assaulting a former aide nearly 30 years ago.

What happened in 1993?
Tara Reade, a former staff assistant to-then Senator Biden, recently revealed to podcaster Katie Harper about what happened between her and Biden in 1993. Quoting Reade, a Vice report says that in the spring of 1993, Reade approached Biden in the Senate office complex to deliver a gym bag. The two were alone.
She alleged that Biden pushed her against the wall and started kissing her. “It happened all at once. The gym bag — I don’t know where it went, I handed it to him, it was gone, and then his hands were on me and underneath my clothes. He went down my skirt but then up inside it. And he penetrated me with his fingers,” Vice report says quoting Reade.
Why is Tara Reade coming forward now?
Reade claims that her experience is shattering as Biden is considered to be a champion of women’s rights. Though Biden has been accused of inappropriate touching or kissing in the past too, he has never been accused of sexual assault, which makes us question the credibility of this allegation. Another question that comes to our mind is why she is accusing him now, 30 years after that incident.

Joe Biden’s response to sexual assault allegations
Biden has obviously denied these allegations and a statement released by his deputy campaign manager and communications director Kate Bedingfield said:
The former vice president has dedicated his public life to changing the culture and the laws around violence against women. He firmly believes that women have a right to be heard — and heard respectfully. Such claims should also be diligently reviewed by an independent press. What is clear about this claim: It is untrue.

Can Reade’s allegations derail Biden’s campaign?
Reade’s charge comes at a crucial time as Biden is seeking Democratic Party’s backing to his campaign as their presidential candidate after Bernie Sanders dropped out of the race last week. And since women are a major part of voting bloc for Democrats, such an allegation could derail his camping. However, it seems unlikely.
A BBC report says Americans are already aware about the “touchy feely-ness” of Biden and still have accepted him as their nominee. “He put out a video saying he’d learned from #metoo that times have changed and that his history of rubbing women’s shoulders, kissing their heads was not appropriate,” adds a BBC report.

Another reason why it will not make much of a difference to Biden is that he is competing against Donald Trump, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than 20 women. In compared to Trump, this allegation against Biden seems inconsequential.
Also, Tara Reade has been reportedly changing her story couple of times and has not been consistent with her version. She is also the only woman so far to accuse Biden of sexual assault. As long as there are no other women who join her, Biden is likely to be safe.
And perhaps the biggest blessing for Biden is the incessant coverage the coronavirus is getting that no news seems big enough than the death and misery the pandemic is causing across the America as well as the world.
