An update on the Bois Locker Room case states that a fake screenshot got mixed in. Does this negate the remaining authentic screenshots or even the misogynistic chats?
The ‘Bois Locker Room’ incident has the entire nation grappling once again with its inherent misogyny and sexism. The incident came to light with Instagram screenshots of the chats where morphed pictures of underage girls satiated the violent sexual fantasies of underage boys. Bois Locker Room fiasco went viral when a member shared some explicit chats publicly on social media. The outrage stemmed from the fact the private pictures were shared, without consent, for the consumption of many.
Highlights:
- A week ago, the ‘Bois Locker Room’ group’s Instagram chat was in the new.
- A new update gives it a SHOCKING turn
- But should this new update in the ‘Bois Locker Room’ incident allow us to ignore the dark truth that surfaced with the actual act?
This culture of entitlement escalated further when the boys concerned threatened to leak pictures with the intent to compromise the “dignity” of girls in question. They even went on to hack and leak pictures of other women and girls who were exposing the group. This ‘Bois Locker Room’ was not just any Instagram group to discuss explore or share in sexual curiosity; it was a group of violent and sexist fantasies and fantasists.
Bois Locker Room: The case of a fake screenshot amidst the REAL ones
A new shocking update in the ‘Bois Locker Room’ case is being shared by all the popular media outlets like Tribune states that a Snapchat screenshot got mixed amidst the actual Instagram screenshots. The police, in their investigations, stumbled upon the same. The said screenshot, which showed a conversation mentioning sexual assault, happened between a male named Siddharth and another person.
The update suggests a girl was using the fake identity of Siddharth and planning her own assault, so as to gauge the character of the male, who is her friend. The other boy in the chat stopped responding and sent a screenshot of the same to his friends. This chat, somehow, got mixed in the screenshots of the Instagram ones of the ‘Bois Locker Room’ incident. The police have now seized the phones of both the juveniles. However, they said in a statement that it was a personal chat and none had the intention to harm the other.
So is everything else in the ‘Bois Locker Room’ a lie?
It isn’t. That is also the question most people need to ask, those who are taking one look at the headlines and rejoicing. There are disgusting comments below these reports wherein people, specifically men, are totally negating the entire incident on the basis of this one screenshot.
And that is the reason why any movement for women, to do away with the daily and persistent sexism, is so difficult to maintain, One slight blip, one misplaced fact, and the misogynists of the world swoop in to discredit the entire narrative. But one wrong fact doesn’t make the entire news incorrect, right?
So, does this single out of context screenshot mean that the entire ‘Bois Locker Room’ incident is false and created to malign men?
The answer is a loud resounding ‘NO’. It does not. Unfortunately, the comments and responses in the chat room are true and genuinely expressed. We just wish that the energy, and intensity which is being exercised on social media to defend the boys involved in the incident, was used to tell them that their perception of the other gender is wrong.
Yes, the criminal repercussions shall alter, given the sexual assault chat is no longer a part of the conversation, but will the social repercussions differ? Will the trauma of the girls involved wane? Will the boys involved know the difference between being sexually curious and being sexually entitled?
Bois Locker Room: The truth that is threatened
The TRUTH remains the same.
The boys shared private pictures WITHOUT CONSENT on a public platform.
The boys threatened to LEAK the pictures to defame the dignity of the women and girls speaking against them.
The boys created more FAKE ACCOUNTS to take revenge.
These are the boys who think that a girl’s identity and dignity does not lie beyond her body, and it can be compromised using the same. These are the boys who think that they are entitled. These are the boys who have the best education at their disposal, but not enough to make them think decently. These are the boys who think that neither consent nor privacy are important.
Instead of asking questions, we see a shifting of blame, where patriarchy’s agents are gleeful that their ‘boys’ are innocent, that they have done nothing wrong.
The problem persists; and so does the sexism
We can ask multiple questions, as we have in the past. But it does not change the truth. It does not change the fact that our education fails at making students literate in life skills, morality, and sensitivity, especially our boys who have to become the men of tomorrow. Their knowledge of the other gender remains skewed and incomplete which, coupled with society’s sexism, turns them more into predators than protectors. Not all, but enough.
Watch: When does the sexism end?
This one screenshot should not be the news: the reaction of the misogynists to its existence should be. That is where we were going wrong before, and that is where we are going wrong now. The Bois Locker Room and its adult equivalents are still unnerving virtual platforms where the dignity of women is shred without remorse, and where sexism flourishes. That is where we need to look.
