Teenage Girls in China Hospitalised with Kidney Damage After Doing Too Many Squats
Squats are a great exercise that has a lot of benefits for your body. They strengthen your legs, glutes and many other muscles as well as activate your joints and bones.
Squats are considered as one of the best and natural toning of the body.
It is claimed that squats can actually help you lose weight and burn the calories, perhaps, for the amount of time spent training. Yet like every exercise, squatting comes with some risk of injury.

Two teenagers in China ended up in the intensive care unit after doing too many squats.
Xiao Tang, a 19-year-old sophomore at a college in Chongqing, China, was not used to exercise. This combined with an apparent competitive streak, led to her being hospitalized when she got into an exercise fight on a video chat with an equally competitive friend.
The two teen girls did squats over and over again, about 1,000 times.
Apparently, they were involved in a contest to see who has higher stamina and who could flex their glutes the longest. Two days later, Tang reported that she was unable to bend her legs due to intense soreness caused by the exercise. She also discovered that her urine had turned brown.
Tang, who was accompanied by her boyfriend to the hospital, was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis – a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure. Tang’s friend was also hospitalized for the same reason.
Rhabdomyolysis, which releases dead muscle fibers into the bloodstream and can not only cause kidney failure but also lead to death.
This means that their body became unable to remove all its toxins, leading to the girl’s turning muddy.
Dr. Bruce Cohen, a medical officer for the FBI told Live Science, Getting this condition through extreme exercise is rare and squats aren’t dangerous in and of themselves. The girls likely exerted themselves well above their physical limits in order to cause the condition. Listen to your body Don’t be stupid.”
