Monica Rambeau debut in Captain Marvel origin story as a little girl, an adult version of her will appear in WandaVision. Marvel might have plans to plant the protege for taking over the Captain Marvel mantel in the MCU.
Captain Marvel’s debut into the MCU was a pretty big deal for various reasons. One of the major reason being the movie is a first female solo released by the MCU. Since Marvel began bringing superheroes to the big screens there is a lot of flack about their diversity issue.
Monica Rambeau The Original Captain Marvel
The milestone coupled with the fact that the movie was a huge success at the box office. It is easy to let Marvel Studios off the hook for some obvious alterations to the Captain Marvel storyline.
While the 2019 movie presented Captain Marvel as Carol Danvers and chose to rather portray Rambeau as a little girl. She has nothing but admiration for her mother’s friend and colleague Monica Rambeau in the comics actually plots a different story arc.
Monica Rambeau’s Comic Book Origin
Born to fisherman father in suburbian New Orleans, Monica began her career as a harbour patrol officer working the shifts. On one of her shifts, she encounters and interferes with a weapon experiment. While unknowingly exposing herself to a direct dose of extra-dimensional energy. Something similar to what happened to Carol Danvers in the movie.
The energy is so immense it immediately disintegrates her normal anatomy, transforming her into pure energy. Although Monica manages to use the energy to successfully destroy the weapon, her whole life changes forever. With her newfound powers, Monica joins the Avengers and trains under Iron Man. Tony teaches her how to properly control and harness her powers.
Over time Rambeau became such a reliable member of the Avengers that there was a unanimous decision to dub her Captain Marvel, in honour of the famous alien warrior, Mar-Vell. She was not only the first African-American female to join the Avengers but also the first female to be given the Captain Marvel mantle.
Rising through the ranks among the Avengers, Rambeau even had a stint as their leader and displayed her leadership abilities flawlessly.
Carol Danvers Over Monica Rambeau
With so much potential and excitement in Monica Rambeau’s story arc. It came as a bit of a surprise for fans that Marvel opted to introduce Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel instead.
Although, Danvers time as Captain Marvel also saw her battle with various notable villains. Monica Rambeau’s Captain Marvel has always been a fan favourite owing to the character’s wittiness, strength and spontaneity. It is interesting to note that Carol Danvers had used other aliases before she became Captain Marvel.
At different times, she was called Ms Marvel, Warbird and Binary. On the other hand, Monica Rambeau took up other aliases after dropping the Captain Marvel title. When Genis-Vell, son of Mar-Vell, decided he wanted to become an active hero, Monica concedes the mantle to him and went as Photon instead. Later on, she would eventually drop that name and become Pulsar, before eventually changing to Spectrum.
It is easy to see how much content and potential is available for the MCU to explore concerning Monica Rambeau. Since Captain Marvel movie timeline is set in 1995, present-day Monica Rambeau is already an adult in the upcoming WandaVision.
Actor Teyonah Parris is set to play Monica Rambeau in the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision. The evidence from leaked set photos suggests she might be working with space force already.
Given that new MCU Phases will see many heroes passing on their mantles. The fact that Carol Danvers already bears the Captain Marvel title suggests that Monica Rambeau’s future in the MCU could take a totally different direction.
It will be interesting to see Rambeau’s transition as Captain Marvel. One thing is certain, fans are eager to see the path that has been carved out for her in the MCU.
