The truth about Marvel and Sony’s different visions of Tony Stark and Peter Parker’s Relationship
The first war ended, and we lost the boy. The second war ended, and we lost the man. Both the wars against Thanos came with their own set of heartbreaks that we weren’t prepared for. Both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame ended up in breaking our most favourite relationship in the MCU — Tony Stark aka Iron Man and Peter Parker aka Spider-Man.
- Tony Stark and Peter Parker’s relationship, a journey we weren’t prepared for
- Sony’s Vision of Spider-Man
- Tony is Marvel’s replacement of uncle Ben
While Peter disintegrated in the first one, Tony sacrificed his life to save the world in the Endgame. Heartbreak all the way! However, did you know, Marvel initially did not plan on having a Tony and Peter story arc altogether?
The Tony Stark-Peter Parker Connection, A Sony Intervention?
Well, we all know the drama that ensued back when Sony said that Spiderman would no longer be a part of the Marvel universe. For some time, all the fans had their hearts in their mouths, literally.
For how else would we know the impact Iron Man’s death had on Peter’s life, how would we know if the latter was coping up? Endgame’s ending was such a powerful twist that its impact just could not be severed. Least of all on Peter, who was so close to Tony and considered him a father figure. Coupled with the fact that Spider-Man: Far From Home had a plot-line which was almost entirely based on Iron Man’s legacy, a villain after it, and Spider-Man stepping into the shoes to save the world, only to be left on a cliffhanger by the end of it.
Sony wanted to sever ties with Marvel and create an independent ‘Amazing Spider-Man 3’, which now stands cancelled.
Well, we are glad things went fine eventually and our beloved teen superhero was back in the universe. But then, an explosive YouTube claim blasted it all as it claimed how the Tony Stark-Peter Park relationship was never the original plan!
Ouch, that was harsh. You can take a look at the video here.
Only, all the evidence suggests otherwise.
Marvel Pre Planned Spider-Man’s Future
Yes, and this goes way back. Tony Stark and Peter Parker first meet in ‘Captain America: Civil War.’ In fact, as per the reports of The Hollywood Reporter, when Marvel was out looking for its Spider-Man, they were auditioning with Iron Man to find out how well the two actors would gel together.
RDJ, whose Iron Man character appears in Civil War… participated with the actors in the tests. Which included former-Sony-chief-turned-producer Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. They were looking for chemistry between the boy and the elder Avenger. The Hollywood Reporter, 2015
Not only this, director John Watts too stated in a 2017 interview that Iron Man was always planned to play a huge part in Spider-Man’s life. He said, “He was always a part of it. That was always a big part, the idea of him being this reluctant mentor… to Peter. Like, just sort of the grand ambition to be like that someday.”
Well, this does make the video’s claims fall a little flat, doesn’t it?
We are glad that Marvel intended for this relationship to happen. Some fans even believe Tony is a replacement for uncle Ben in the MCU. Tony Stark and Peter Parker’s relationship surely blossomed over the movies and we see the role it plays in maturing the younger avenger in his latest standalone venture, ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’.
What’s next for Spider-Man?
Well, now that Tony is no longer around, the boy avenger is out on his own. But he is growing up and Nick Fury is surely checking upon him. With Tony’s legacy in his hands, he surely has the means to know where he is going in life. The only issue is the ending of the movie wherein Spider-Man’s identity has been revealed by Quentin Beck, who also frames the young avenger for his own misdeeds, before dying.
We’ll have to see how it goes from here. The news is Marvel and Sony both are now on a lookout for Hell’s Vigilante Daredevil to help Peter out in the next Spider-Man instalment.
