Marvel’s first big-ticket release The Eternals was scheduled for November 2020. But Coronavirus has shut the world down and has compelled major production houses to push their release date.
For Marvel Studios it was a tough decision to make given the continuity errors that could hamper the MCU. But Marvel recently came up with the new schedule of phase 4 and everything looks fine. The entire slate is pushed back up till the year 2022.
Heads Up! The reason that Marvel Studio is keeping its phase 4 movie Eternals and its villain in a mystery

- The MCU Eternals are different from Comics
- Why The Eternals Is Kept Under Tight Wraps
But Fans are now more agitated than before about The Eternals movie. The new set of cosmic Superheroes were announced at San Diego Comic-Con and since there are no new updates about the movie.
The production of the Eternals was wrapped up before the coronavirus lockdown but the studio is struggling to finish the post-production like the other businesses.
The Mystery Around the Eternals
Marvel Studio has kept tight security around any potential spoilers or leaks for this movie. As far as that the marketing is also tightly under wraps toy sets, merchandise among other information.
In the new phase, The Eternals movie will now hit the theatres in February 2021. Except for some leaked set photos, all we know about the movie is its enormous star cast and Director Chloe Zaho.
The movie will be first official step by Marvel into artist and writer Jack Kirby’s cosmic universe. It’s to be noted that Jack Kirby designed the whole cosmic universe on various humanoids and God-like creatures and Eternals’ story spans a thousand years ago.
However, for the MCU there are some design changes that all the characters went through and also some gender changes to make the universe more inclusive.
The MCU Eternals
The Eternals have a special set of powers. Much like Jack Kirby created Thor who is a God, Eternals too posses cosmic powers. Thousands of years ago the Celestials experimented on humans and created two new races the successful experiment, the Eternals and not-so-successful one, the Deviants.
All Eternals are capable of super strength, teleportation, telepathy, telekinesis, matter manipulation, flight through levitation, creating illusions, and the ability to shoot cosmic rays out of their eyes and hands.
Apart from that, all the Eternals have control over molecules that helps them to regenerate and focus on any given power they want. The movie will introduce us to 10 such aliens.
Played by actor Kumail Nanjiani, MCU’s Kingo is re-imagined as Bollywood superstar. In the comics, he makes samurai moves in Japan and is an expert swordsman.
The second strongest Eternal of Earth Ikaris is being played by Game of Thrones fame Richard Madden. Just like his comic counterpart he has been described as ‘all-powerful.’ Ikaris has channelled all his energy in a way that makes him better than the rest in most areas.
To be played by Don Lee, Gilgamesh is the most powerful Eternal than Ikaris on Earth. His power levels in the MCU is next to Thor and Hercules and certainly above Captain Marvel and Namor.
This is the new Marvel ‘nerd’ on the block. The Eternals synopsis reveals him as an ‘inventor.’ But he is not only interested in creating weapon and technology his inherent cosmic rays are especially potent and dangerous.
Angelina Jolie is playing the character of Thena the ‘warrior princess.’ She is an expert in wielding various forms of weaponry, with her favourite weapons being a golden spear and a crossbow.
Eternal Sersi is played by Gemma Chan in the movie. Leaked set photo shows her using the ‘molecule manipulation’ power from the comics. The leaked set photos also show Chan with co-star Kit Harrington who is playing the Black Knight in the movie.
One of the three characters that swapped the gender for the MCU is Lia McHugh’s Sprite. Sprite despite her mortality has the physical appearance of a child. And she is a master manipulator.
Next character to swap the gender is Lauren Ridloff’s Makkari. In the comics, she is the ‘fastest’ Eternal. In the past, she has outrun Quicksilver himself.
Salma Hayek is chosen to play the leader of the Eternals Ajak. In the comics, he is a man but for the MCU the gender has been changed. Ajak has the quality to communicate to the creators of the Eternals. This quality is something to look out for.
Why The Eternals Is Kept Under Tight Wraps
This was all that we know about the Eternals from the official SDCC. What we don’t know anything at all is about villains, the Deviants, arch-nemesis for the Eternals, set up by Marvel.
Created by the Celestials along with Eternals, the Deviants are the result of the failed experiment. They are genetically mutated that gives them an odd colour and deformities’.
While announcing the movie Kevin Feige also announced that the Deviants will look different from what they looked like in the comics. We have all the details about the heroes but clearly, Marvel is keeping the villain Deviants, away from the fans.
Since no cast have been announced or called for the phase 4 movie, there’s a possibility that the Marvel Studio might CGI the villain Deviants that would need only voiceover work to be done.
After villains like the Mad Titan-Thanos, Hella and Loki indulging fans in the Infinity Saga movies. Marvel would want fans to anticipate the villain in the next phase.
