A new leak suggests that Marvel has made significant changes in the Shang-Chi movie
Marvel Studio’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in a limbo, like many of its other movie productions. In a rescheduled phase 4 the movie is set to release in May 2021 while its filming has been hit by the Coronavirus lockdown.
Some of the film’s production took place right before the lockdown began. Hence the lag in the process has resulted in the surfacing of new plot leak. And by the sound of it seems like fans won’t like the changes Marvel has made in the Shang-Chi’s origin story.
Heads Up! A new plot leak suggests Shang-Chi movie in making is much different from its comic book counterpart
- Marvel’s Expectation From Shang-Chi
- Leaked Shang-Chi’s Powers and Awkwafina’s Role
- Should the Shang-Chi Leak Be Considered Valid?
Marvel’s Expectation From Shang-Chi
A new entrant in the MCU, Shang-Chi is the unsung Master of Kung Fu in the comic world. Unlike his counterparts in the Marvel universe, Shang-Chi technically has no superpower. He isn’t even a superhuman like Captain America. Rather, he has mastered combat abilities and skills that easily qualify as extraordinary.
With an all Asian cast and director, Marvel Studio aims to achieve a similar effect like the Black Panther movie. The idea is to include an Asian superhero to blend in with Asian American sensibilities just like Black Panther blended the African American theme in the MCU.
The movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and casts Canadian actor Simu Liu in the titular character. Asian actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai is playing the antagonist Mandarin. Furthermore, actor Awkwafina and Malaysian comedian Ronny Xin Yi Chieng are confirmed to play undisclosed roles in the movie.
Leaked Shang-Chi’s Powers and Awkwafina’s Role
The FandomWire leak claims, Awkafina is playing the role of Fah Lo Suee. In the comics, Suee is Shang-Chi’s sister. However, as weird as it might sound, in the MCU Awkafina is playing Mandarin’s daughter and Shang-Chi’s love interest!
The leak goes on to suggest the basic plot of the movie. The MCU Shang-Chi grows up in an orphanage run by Mandarin that trains kind to fight. Eventually, Shang-Chi escapes from the orphanage and is on a run from Mandarin.
Mandarin chases him only to find a grown-up Shang-Chi and promises him money, power and freedom in exchange for a fight in the magical tournament. The winner of the tournament receives the legendary 10 Rings that the Mandarin wants.
Next, leak says, the 10 Rings tournament is ‘Marvel Infused Mortal Combat’ sequence. As per the leak, Shang-Chi’s MCU power is to be able to clone himself during a fight. However, this is in contrast with the comic books where Shang-Chi can clone himself for anything.
So, imagine Shang-Chi in a hand to hand combat sequence infused with magic.
Should the Shang-Chi Leak Be Considered Valid?
If the leak is anything to go by Marvel has made significant changes to the story line. In the comics Shang-Chi’s motivated by the malice of his father Fu Manchu, the character replaced as Mandarin in the MCU.
It’s the entire essence of the character like Luke Skywalker being son of Darth Vader. Playing with the character’s origin story might not work well with comic book lovers.
About that Mandarin thing! Fans have seen Mandarin played by Sir Ben Kingsley in Iron Man movie before. The step proved to be an actual waste of the actor and character according to both fans and experts alike.
Now with more anticipation about the characters and taking it away from its crux seems like a Marvel Studio idea but a far cry from what they achieve to do.
These leaks should be taken with a pinch of salt while we wait for Disney to resume Marvel Movie productions.
