THE UN(ORDINARY) LIFE.
Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui had penned the journey of his life in a book titled ‘An ordinary life’, which gave a true insight into the life and personality of this extraordinary person. But, then it got caught in controversies due to some of its content and had to be called back by the publishers. His life portrays the story of a true-blue bolly-wood masala movie with the main protagonist being born in a poor family, who works hard to become rich and successful.
Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui was born in a not very affluent Muslim family of Muzzafarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh. He graduated with a ‘Bachelor of Science’ degree, but, ended up joining and graduating from the National School of Drama. His ambitions and passions led him to Mumbai.
THE UNCONVENTIONAL ACTOR WITH THE CONVENTIONAL LOOKS
He was an actor, with regular looks. They were in direct contrast to the expected norms (tall, fair, good looking)of the industry. Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui accepted this fact and knew that he had to make it on the basis of his work and performances only. This did not scare him. In his own words, many a time he has had to have Parle-G biscuits and water for breakfast, lunch, and dinners. But, despite sufferings, he kept going, trying to feed on his passions.
Few know that Nawazuddin Siddiqui bagged his first role as a side-artist in the Aamir-Khan starrer ‘Sarfarosh’ in 1999. He did many small roles to ‘make-do’ in Munnabhai MBBS, School, New York, amongst others. Nawaz’s big break came with an immaculate performance in Anusha Rizvi’s ‘Peepli Live’. His work gained critical acclaim and his skills of being the ‘actor’ began getting recognized.
His exceptional performances in films like ‘Patang: The kite’ (premiered at Berlin Film festival), ‘Kahaani’, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘Miss Lovely’, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur-2’, ‘Manjhi: The mountain man’ have been highly appreciated. Nawazuddin Siddiqui tasted mainstream commercial glory with Salman Khan- starrers ‘Kick’ and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. He has also been a recipient of the Special Jury Awards category in National Awards, 2012. In his own words, as an actor, he does not believe in art or commercial cinema; Nawaz only looks out for good cinema.
THE METHODICAL ACTOR
Nawazauddin Siddiqui believes that to play a character and its part well, an actor is not required to understand its heart and emotions. Rather, he needs to understand his mind, his actions and his political demeanors that guide him within the storyline towards the target end. This methodical actor thus imbibes within himself the actor he plays and develops its mindset either as per his own understanding or as per the behavior of real persons.
THE CREATIVE GENIUS
Nawazuddin’s aim as an actor is not to make his audience cry or smile; rather, to alienate them to immerse themselves within the journey of the character. These are the makings and mindset of a rare artistic genius mind that only knows and loves his art. He is rather detached from the commercial success and failures attached to his work. His success has inspired millions of ‘to-be actors’ to believe in their talent; to create their own sky and reach for its stars.
AN ENVIABLE LINE-UP OF PERFORMANCES
Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s latest outings have been his genuinely unabashed character plays of Balasaaheb Thackeray in ‘Thackeray’ and the contemporary writer of the older times Saadat Hasan Manto in ‘Manto’. His performance in the web-series ‘Sacred Games’ has also been admired. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is now recognized as a prized actor in both national and international acting circles.
