Fashion Designer Masaba Gupta has been at the centre of media attention much before she first started making a name for herself. That’s because she is the love child of former West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards and Indian actress Neena Gupta.
Ordinarily, one would imagine that a girl like Masaba Gupta who has mixed ethnicity and is raised by a single mother would find it difficult to blend in with society. Instead, she proudly wears her distinctiveness on her sleeve, for her Twitter page reads – Designer & Founder of an India-Proud Womenswear Label taking a colourful bite out of a Caribbean Heart.

Masaba has quickly grown out of her lineage to create a special niche for herself in the fast-paced and hugely competitive Indian fashion industry. It is quite surprising for a girl who was initially reluctant to even enter the field.
Yes, it was an accident.
Fashion came in by divine accident. They headed to Anupam Kher’s school Actor Prepares, which was situated close to SNDT University. The university had a display board advertising its fashion course. On instinct, her mother told her to enroll with the fashion course.
Yet, Masaba hated SNDT initially, as she felt they imparted bookish knowledge and give impractical training. But when designing classes started in the second year, Masaba began to enjoy the course.
Where it all came from?
Masaba feels she got her fashion sense of her father, who likes giving subtle twists to his dressing. She admits that her heart lies in the Carribean – slow village life, laid back attitudes and the vibrant scenic beauty of the seaside. Masaba Gupta’s father indeed played a major role in her life of fashion.
It’s now embedded in our minds
In a short span of time, Masaba’s flamboyant use of prints caught everyone’s attention, and she became the youngest fashion designer to debut at Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week. Masaba joined Satya Paul in 2012 to become the youngest fashion creative director ever. She became popular for her ability to synergise Indian bridal wears with contemporary ready-to-wear fashion. After her two-year contract ended, she started working on her own labels.
Masaba launched her Wanderess collection in the opening show at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2014, where actress Shilpa Shetty was the showstopper.She also launched her brand ‘Masaba Lite’, which suits budgets of young Indian girls in the early 20 age group.
She is a highly approachable fashion designer, who has also used social media smartly. Masaba is the first Indian designer to do a fashion show on Instagram, and also claims that Whatsapp accounts for around 60% of her sales.
Masaba Gupta was married to Bollywood film producer Madhu Mantena.The couple tied the knot in June 2015, in a quiet and intimate affair. The estranged couple went ahead with filing for divorce at the Bandra Family Court. It was also reported that Masaba did not demand any alimony.
Now, according to the latest report, Madhu has issued a statement saying that after much thought and consideration, Masaba and he have come to an amicable conclusion and have decided to “move forward separately
Dense fashion sense
Masaba has a very different take on bridal wear, as she believes that it should be comfortable and reusable. This was the inspiration for her first bridal collection at JW Marriot, Kolkata in 2018. Even actress Sonam Kapoor wore a Masaba saree when she first visited New Delhi as a bride.
On her core fashion sense, Masaba admits that she likes to “take something familiar and surprise people by giving it a new personality”. She has dared to bring out her unconventional creativity to the Indian fashion scene. This has made her one of the most sought after fashion designers in India today, with a highly promising future ahead.
