‘Kaafir’ is one of the best stories ever written for a female lead, says Did Dia Mirza playing the lead in the show.
Storytelling, be it on the television, films or the web, it enables us to leave our daily routines and live a part of a story of someone else’s life. These stories have the finesse and prowess of growing on its audience and help them see things in a newer light. ‘Kaafir’ is one such story. It is also the debut of Dia Mirza (renowned Bolly-wood sensation), the gorgeous actress, in the web world. And for a change, the story here does not develop on her good looks; rather it revolves around her immaculate performance of ‘Kainaaz Akhtar’. The actress within her seems to evolve and turn golden with age.
THE ROLE THAT CHANGED IT ALL
Breathtaking beauty is exemplified by Dia Mirza as ‘Kainaaz Akhtar’ in an equally beautiful surroundings of Kashmir. The two are also somewhat analogous in the context of a lost vision for the future. They both are simply gorgeous and serene but have lost their path ahead due to their intrinsic battles. ‘Kaafir’ is a truly awakening web-series on the Zee5 OTT platform, and Dia Mirza as its lead protagonist has done wonders. She somehow seems to imbibe ‘Kainaat’ within herself and makes the series a ‘must-watch’ for the fragile-minded generation of today. The character depth and performance, thus portrayed have to be experienced to be believed.
The character unfolds as a Pakistani girl, who somehow ends up in Indian Prisons of Kashmir and is declared a militant, where she gets raped and then pregnant. A journalist-cum lawyer then takes up her cause to provide her with some recluse. The storytelling required the character to portray the feelings of a woman, a mother, a female, citizen-facing anguish, intolerance, hatred, love, weakness, strength; all in a very subtle form. Dia Mirza’s aced the concept and the emotions required with despairing ease. After a long time, actually since her debut in the industry (that too in her second innings). Dia Mirza was sought to deliver a performance that could give ‘goose-bumps’ to her audience with the sheer intricacy and realism of her character play. And, she did not disappoint.
CINEMA SHIFT: FROM STARS TO STORIES
Who can forget, ‘Reena’, the young gorgeous lead character of ‘Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein’ played by Dia Mirza on her debut? She had won millions of hearts and had instantly become the dream-girl of the nation. The movie and the character had gone on to develop its own cult following. This gorgeous actress was loved for her good looks that somehow epitomized simplicity, innocence, elegance, and positivity.
In those times, she was the traditional Indian beauty with contemporary brains, a combination meant for film actresses. But, her acting skills were somehow not that well tested and looked up to in her youth. She has evolved, so has her skills and so is her career. The actor in her has been creating waves on the screens of ‘Kaafir’, wherein her power-packed performance has managed to astound one and all. The praises and raving reviews showered from all ends by peers, critics and audiences are blatant proof.
ON THE WEB
Dia Mirza has recently re-launched herself and her synergy into the cinematic world. The advent of content-driven cinema and a definite audience- shift towards it has created space for the development of shows like ‘Kaafir’ and characters like ‘Kaaynaat’. Dia’s performance in the eight episodes of ‘Kaafir’ was spell-binding. Its a much-awaited sequel is also on the cards.
Dia is like our red wine, beautiful and potent to the last sip. She seems to have taken to the OTT platform like a pro. Apart from acting, she has also been busy producing a sitcom web series titled ‘Mind the Malhotras’ which is another success story altogether. Other acting and production-related ventures by this diva are also on the cards.
Her beauty and charisma do not seem to have diminished with age. Rather, age seems to glorify her passion to deliver may be lesser, but definitely better cinema. Dia Mirza is also set to star in Nikhil Advani’s next history-based web series. In an industry, known to create very few substantiating roles for actresses after a certain age, she has been making strides with a sure and confident footing.
