“I don’t want to be a padding for another actor”, said Abhay Deol.
Abhay Deol is one of the most versatile actors in Bollywood today. In spite of coming from the influential Deol family, Abhay rose to fame holding his own and has made his mark by choosing roles no one else could have. Here’s us telling you why we love this talented hunk and why you should too.
In the Beginning
Born to Ajit Singh Deol and Usha Deol Abhay has been under the influence of actors as his uncle Dharmendra, as well as his cousins Sunny and Bobby, were already well known names in Bollywood. Needless to say he was always inclined towards choosing acting as a profession. However, he kept his focus on completing his studies first before he took the plunge.
Taking His First Steps
Abhay made his debut in 2005 when Imtiaz Ali took him under his wing with Socha Na Tha. The movie, though modestly successful, worked as a stepping stone for Abhay. Then came Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd and Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local, and Abhay got to try his hand in comedy as well. But his most sincere performance during that time came with Manorama Six Feet Under for which Abhay was lauded for showing maturity and intelligence with which he played his character and won his first Best Actor Award at the Indo-American Arts Council (You’ve never heard of that? Abey Bade Logon Ko milta hai ye award!)
Abhay turned out to be a powerhouse by the second half of the decade when he started doing unconventional roles with Oye Lucky Lucky Oye! Let’s be honest, you loved this Superchor didn’t you? Abhay played the character with such swag that you can’t help but willingly get conned by him. But no other movie had done so much for him than Anurag Kashyap’s Dev.D. The idea for the film was conceptualized by Kashyap while in conversation with Deol when the latter spoke about a man frequenting an L.A. strip club like a modern-day Devdas. The film, along with Abhay’s epic performance didn’t go unnoticed as critics went as far as giving Dev.D 5 out of 5 stars. The Offbeat(ing) continues for Abhay with Shanghai where he convincingly played an IAS officer going against the system.

The humility of an artist is evident when he is willing to let someone else be in the limelight. Abhay’s next projects critically and commercially successful films Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Raanjhanaa where played supporting characters rather than a main one. Abhay once again proved that lead or not, and no matter the star power of fellow actors, he will always leave an impact.
What lies Ahead?
Abhay has finally stepped into the realm of online streaming with Netflix’s Chopsticks that released in May 2019. The actor is going to knock it out of the park once again as his international project Line of Discent is ready and is already garnering praise at various international Film festivals. The first trailer released in Feb 2019 is blowing the audience away as it showcases Abhay sharing the screen with legends like Prem Chopra and Brandon Frasier. Going beyond Bollywood, Abhay is set to break the language barrier by starring in Tamil fantasy film Idhu Vedhalam Sollum Kathai where he shall play king Vikramaditya. We just can’t wait to see either of them! Not only this
the trailer of “Jungle Cry” was released on May 19 at Cannes Film Festival 2019.
Abhay is portraying Jena in the film, which tells the story of tribal children who learnt the sport from scratch and within four months could win the junior World Cup in the UK in 2007.
Apart from his acting career, Abhay also has a vested interest in Mixed Martial Arts, so much so that he got professional training for Israeli Martial Arts form Krav Maga. Yup, he is a shy, soft-spoken, lean, mean, fighting machine!

Our Final Word
Abhay Deol holds the persona of a sweet yet matured human being and that shows in the characters he chooses to play. Sure the mainstream moviegoers don’t always agree with his choices but there’s no denying that he is among the rare species of actors who go beyond the conventional and push that envelope just a little further. You keep going Mr. Deol! We as your fans will not shy away from showering our love on you.
