Condom sales surge through the roofs
Of late, it has been observed that there has been a dramatic spike in the sales of condoms and sex toys during lockdown.
While the global economy is at a standstill, it is a festive time for the producers of the same. Seems like business is booming like never before.
The British lingerie chain, Ann Summers, has witnessed a surge of over 27% in the sales of their sex toys. While this has been registered, people are making sure that there’s as little noise as possible in a full household. Hence, their quieter vibrator – the Whisper Rabbit – has been a hit.
A Swedish luxury sex toys brand, Lelo, has been blessed with a 40% hike in sales.
Axel-Jürg Potempa, a German sexual health specialist, says —
There may be a baby boom in the Christmas owing to the festive time in bed during these times of isolation.
What could be the explanation?
There can be two possible explanations for the same. Since the outbreak of the virus has instilled a sense of fear among people, this is likely to result in adrenaline rush, and therefore, a pump of dopamine which creates desire and increased libido.
While this was a purely scientific explanation for the increase in the sales of condoms and sex toys, you can’t really blame the sudden lockdown for it either. People went to the markets and hoarded sanitizers, condoms, etc.
After all, they had no idea when the lockdown would be lifted and still don’t. Might as well stock up, right?
Karex, world’s largest producer of condoms, had to shut 3 of its factories in Malaysia. After having waited for the government to give them a heads up, their operation has still been stuck at 50% capacity.
While this may be taken lightly, it can have adverse effects of epic proportions. For countries where condoms are supplied as humanitarian aid, it can be a bit of a problem. Cases of HIV may increase as well as the rate of pregnancy.
Forging new relationships, are we?
While sex has become the favourite past time, online dating, extra marital affairs on dating websites, and illicit relations have made space for themselves owing to the boredom among men and women. These connections have been providing a sense of self soothing as people are distracting themselves during these hard times.
Whether a baby boom will be happening, we will know in time. However, this crisis like any other crisis has the potential to push relationships to their next phase. It could be positive or detrimental.
